Eagle Talon Car Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1998 Eagle Talon 4
cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 55,000 miles. Vehicle has recently experienced
difficulty starting. Engine would crank but not turn over until 2nd or 3rd try.
Replaced battery, crank sensor, fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, and had
fuel system completely flushed & cleaned at dealership. Began adding dry gas to
each fill-up, which seemed to help - since the vehicle has started on the first
try for the past 30+ starts. Today vehicle just shut-off while being driven. Not
stalled-out, just went dead completely after 1 being driven 1 mile. Radio &
lights went out, lost power assist, etc. Pulled over, put car in park and
started engine without a problem. Drove 2 miles home without a problem. What
could have caused this to happen & might it be related to the starting problems
recently? Could it be an ignition switch or something else in the electrical
system that caused both problems. The only other issue that we've had that may
be related to this was that the interior lights went out on me once while
driving at night (dashboard, console, everything) but then came back on after a
few seconds. This occurred around the same time that the starting problems
surfaced also.
Answer: Be sure that all
power feeds off the battery are good. Check all fusible links in the fuse/relay
center under hood for any damage. Check all relays for good clean contact where
they plug in
Question: 1993 Eagle Talon 4
cyl Two wheel drive Manual 202,000 miles. When Cold the car had a hard time
idling until you warmed it up a little. The heater in the car was having
problems too. I changed the Thermostat last night and found the old one was
stuck open. After replacing the thermostat, the car idles fast when cold then
once warmed up it starts to idle down then up then down and keeps pulsating as
such. Then you drive it, it seems ok but when you stop at a stop sign it starts
idling up and down again.
Answer: Have your idle air
control valve checked. They are the culprit most of the time.
Question Follow Up:
Thank you. You were right. I
unplugged the idle air control valve on the filter compartment and clean the
plug with contact cleaner. It fixed the problem. You guys Rock!
Question: 1994 Eagle Talon 4
cyl Front Wheel Drive 100,000 miles. Just recently I bought throttle body
cleaner and used it, after I used it my engine idles high, as I'm coming to a
stop and push my clutch in my engine idles back up to about 1 and a half rpms
and stays that way till after I'm sitting in one spot for a bit. Is something
sticking, is it possible that I got cleaner on the throttle position sensor and
messed it up???? Any suggestions would be great, thanks.
Answer: Recheck the throttle
body plate/linkages for binding, idle speed control motor speed and throttle
positioning sensor.
Question: 1993 Eagle Talon 4
cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 125,000 miles. Car will start then in a few minutes
you will hear a fairly loud clicking noise ,sounds like right side of engine
compartment and engine will die. it may or may not start back up right away. I
always manage to get it home but it may take awhile. check engine light comes on
while it clicks then goes out. Sounds like a switch or relay clicking or a
injector?
Answer: Have you had it
scanned to see if it stored a code? The only relay I can see in that block that
could possibly kill the engine is the alt relay. Try swapping it for the
headlight relay and see if it dies?
Question:
We recently purchased a 92 Eagle Talon for our son. The
car had just come from repair having fuel injectors and a new alternator
installed. The engine is a replace engine (Mitsubishi) with less than 100,000.
Standard Shift The charging system was not working properly, so we called the
garage that had done the work and the mechanic said that he indeed had not used
an altimeter to check if it was charging. We had the car towed to the garage as
it was not yet licensed. The mechanic called us back to say that the alternator
fuse was blown. We also paid as he said there was a fuel line leak and we got an
inspection also. While he had the car for repair we licensed the vehicle. My two
sons picked up the car and drove it less than ten miles down the road at a
maximum speed of 45mph. The car started to shake and made a load noise, and then
stopped running. My son coasted let it coast to the bottom of a small knoll.
They opened the hood, the car was steaming, and the serpentine belt was totally
loose not broken or frayed) In fact, I think the belt had just been replaced
also before we bought it. The car was towed back to the same mechanic and the
only thing he has told us is the crank shaft is shot. cracked or bent? I'm not
sure of which he said as he talked to my son who is not here currently. Others
have suggested that the engine went because the belt was off and the engine
wasn't cooled. If the mechanic had just been working on parts that required
removing the belt, is it likely that he is responsible for the engine to fail.
Answer: Usually when belts
are left loose they make noise, unless they are so loose that the belt isnt even
turning. Does this car have gauges? do the dash warning lights work? and what
specifically is wrong with the crankshaft?
Question: I have a 1990 turbo
eagle talon, 115,000 mi. One time it will start without hesitation, next time it
will crank, but not catch, a few minutes later it will start just fine! Probably
not the timing belt, I had it replaced recently, along with tensioner. Dealer
can't see it until Monday. Is there anything that might be damaged if I continue
to drive it for the next four days. It would be in town driving and not much of
that. What sort of things should I ask the mechanic about on Monday. I can't
begin to tell you how tired I am of trying to find a good mechanic in this town
(wilmington, OH). I think they see a woman come in and think that I'm to dumb to
explain things to, and I won't mind waiting 6 days on a tune-up. I've had some
bad experiences with a few local garages, which is why I'm back at the dealers.
Answer: Have your spark plugs
and wires been checked? Also, have them check your starter.
Question:
I bought a 1992 Eagle Talon tsi, awd. it has a 2.0 liter
in-line 4 cylinder turbocharged engine with about 120,000 miles on it and I had
been driving it all fall and it seemed like not a week would go by where I
wouldn't be driving and all of a sudden smoke would pour from my hood. I open
the hood and to my surprise another coolant line blew. I had replaced every
single coolant line in the car a week after I bought it and since then I have
had to repair the lines over a dozen times. What is going on??? What am I doing
wrong??? I know I am hooking the lines up correctly and the hose clamps are
tightened to specs. is there a different type of hose I should be using instead
of just a regular braided heater hose? Any input would be so so greatly
appreciated. I just cant figure this one out. thanks
Answer: Try using concentrate
antifreze with no water and replace your thermastat with a low-temp 180 degree
thermostat.
