Dodge Reliant Car Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1989 Dodge Reliant mileage 155,000. Front engine mount (by radiator) replaced. The entire engine rocks back and forth every time I place the vehicle in drive or reverse. I have checked the mounts near the struts and they appear fine. Is there another mount that I do not see?

Answer: No, your car’s engine has only three engine mounts. You should replace all the engine mounts, if one is worn out the others probably are wore out too.

Question: 1989 Dodge Reliant mileage: 161,000. When the air conditioner is on and the car is running at 60 MPH, the air conditioner blows very cold. In traffic with stop and go it starts blowing hot. I have replaced compressor, clutch, dryer, condenser and also installed inline filter. When in traffic, temperature gauge climbs and then the air conditioner will blow hot. Is there a limitor switch or something that cuts the air conditioner out when the temperature gauge gets to a certain point? Any ideas of how I can fix the problem?

Answer: Check the cooling system, particularly the radiator to make sure it is not partially plugged. Additionally, check the radiator fan for proper operation. If the engine temperature is running way above normal, some of the heat is transferred to the air conditioning condenser, which causes the air conditioner to lose efficiency. As for your question about a "limitor" switch, there is a high-pressure switch in the air conditioning system that cuts the compressor out when the pressure gets too high.

Question: 1988 Dodge Reliant mileage: 140,000. Is there a way to stop a leaking rear head gasket by using a sealant or is that not a good remedy? I've been quoted a $1200.00 repair bill and there must be another way. Is there? Can one head gasket be repaired without repairing the other?

Answer: We have never had much luck using a cooling system sealant to stop a leaking head gasket. If only one head gasket is leaking then just that head gasket can be replaced. However, be forewarned that the other gasket may soon be leaking. For economy reasons we usually change both at the same time, it is not half price just to do one.
