MORE: Dodge Truck Repair Questions

Question: 1999 Dodge 2500 24v diesel truck. Shifts from fourth to third at cruising speeds I had it scanned four times and it keeps coming up with a 1693 fault in companion module. The torque converter constantly went from lock to unlock. I have been reading technical bulletins and the closest I have come up with is a TSB 18-02-99 which suggests a software upgrade. Also on the scanner the TPS varied .20 volts. Local mechanics said TPS for my truck would cost me $400.00. Any ideas what else it could be?

Answer: The TPS sensor goes bad all the time on these trucks and if you have high mileage/sever usage, the transmission could be going out also.

Question: 1998 Dodge mileage: 30,000.  I have engine "ping or spark knock.”  I have tried new Splitfire sparkplugs, 89, 93 octane gas and have adjusted the timing, none of which have worked.  I still have knock around 3000 RPM under load what do I do?

Answer: We recommend installing the same brand and heat range spark plugs the manufacturer installed in your truck.  Check the EGR valve.  If it is not opening, pinging can occur.

Question: 1965 Dodge D-700 361 mileage: 80,000. I have a farm truck that only gets driven a few times a year. It will not start. Very weak spark from the coil wire and I only am getting 2.3 volts from the positive side of the coil. Recently, new plugs, wires, points, condenser, cap and rotor and ran perfectly until now. I can't figure out where to look for lack of voltage to the coil. Should the negative side of the coil deliver 12 volts also?

Answer: With the points open, you should have approximately 12-volts at the coil. Check the point gap and the wires inside the distributor to make sure they are adjusted properly.

Question: 1997 Dodge Pickup 1500 mileage: 138,000  I get a really bad miss in the engine when I put it under a load such as acceleration. If I floor the pedal it will go away but I cannot cruise, if I take my foot off the pedal to where there is no miss the truck slows. I was told the carburetor is at fault but I have rebuilt and set to specks this Holley 1945 single barrel. I now have much more power but still the same problem.  I have replaced the filter, cap, rotor, wires, plugs and checked the compression (all cylinders come in at spec 80-120 2-6 at 120 and #1 at 100.)  Air filter is clean. This motor is not equipped with an oxygen sensor.  My gas pedal seems to have a range where there is no miss from a little gas or a lot of gas, no in between.

Answer: Check the head gaskets to be sure they are not blown between cylinders.  Also, check the intake manifold gasket where it seals to the head to see if you have a vacuum leak on one or two cylinders.  The engine should be scoped under power if possible (if automatic, power brake it).

Question: 1998 Dodge 1500 mileage: 145,000. When I stop for a light or a stop sign the engine dies on me. It only dies when my truck is going up hill fully warmed up. It also dies when I hit a bump or go around a curve slow.  It does not die when it is on the level.  About a week ago I took my truck to Goodyear they tested it out and said there was nothing wrong. Every time I drive it, it always dies on me. Could it be the fuel pump and or the carburetor?

Answer: Check the float level in the carburetor and check the float itself, it may have fuel inside.  Replace the needle and seat when the carburetor is apart.

Question: 2001 Dodge 1500 Truck mileage: 94,000.  Noise from under vehicle like ringing through drive shaft. I dropped drive shaft and turned the pinion gear and also the right wheel and it felt rough at both places.  The u-joints are ok. Any suggestions?

Answer: It sounds like bad pinion bearings or wheel bearings.

Question: 1976 Dodge mileage: high. I need to know how to adjust a 2-barrel carburetor for my truck I installed a rebuilt one and when cold it doesn’t want to hold an idle. The truck feels sluggish when I go up hills and when I accelerate from a stop it hesitates I just took the carb out of the box and installed it. I think the carb was a holly.

Answer: Make sure the main jets in the carburetor are the proper size for your truck. From what you describe, it sounds like your carburetor is too lean. In addition, check to see that the float level is correctly set.

Question: 2000 Dodge 2500, mileage 45,000.  My truck will run for about five miles then when I take my foot off the accelerator, it dies and won’t start again for about thirty minutes then it runs good again. The truck has been sitting for about a year.

Answer: First, if possible, when your truck dies and will not restart, check for spark at the ignition coil. If no spark, the ignition module may be failing. Also, check for fuel in the carburetor. If no fuel, check fuel pressure from fuel pump.

Question: 2001 Dodge 1500, mileage: 57,000. The check engine light came on so I took the pickup to the dealer and they reset it. They said the purge control solenoid was the problem. The light came on again a few days later. Is there a way I can reset without taking back to a mechanic?

Answer: It sounds like the dealer missed the problem. Return to the dealer and insist on fixing it right. Note: Only the OBD II scanner system can reset the MIL (check engine light).
