MORE: Dodge Aries Repair Questions

Question: 1989 Dodge Aries mileage: 102,000. My son's car drives poorly and it is driving me nuts. The car chugs as if rich and has low power and poor mileage. I keep getting codes 34, 51 and 52. 34 should be for cruise control, which it doesn't have, or EGR solenoid, which I can't find. All I find is the EGR valve/transducer assembly. The EGR appears to work correctly. I can see the pintle move as the engine is revved. Adding vacuum at idle kills the engine. Oxygen sensor replaced three times! Still getting "too rich / too lean" codes. TPS, Map, CTS, all pass tests or have been replaced. Where to go now?

Answer: Check for a plugged catalytic converter. It is probably causing your problem.

Question: 1989 Dodge Aries K mileage: 91,000. My car starts and stops fine but after driving for a while on the highway or above 40 mph, it has a tendency to die after coming to an immediate stop. If I'm driving on the highway for fifteen minutes and I stop at an intersection, it will sputter a little, and gradually die off especially when I start up again uphill and to the left. It's not an evil car, but this one defect will probably be the death of me. To fix it, my friend tried upping the rpm's a smidgen and it worked a little. He said that it idled slowly and that the carburetor suffered from blow-by. Unfortunately, this only made the problem more an unpredictable annoyance. Have I a lost cause?

Answer: From what you tell us, your dying problems may be caused by a faulty oxygen sensor or idle speed motor.

Question:  1989 Dodge Aries  mileage: 100,000.  This car was a great running car. It starts great and idles fine but, God forbid that you step on the gas and it dogs right out. The codes are 12, 13, 21. 41 & 47 plus my brother-in-law thought that the cat-converter might be plugged.

Answer:   First clear the trouble codes, then turn on the key and recheck the codes to pinpoint the problem.

Question:  1989 Dodge Aries fuel injection, mileage 78,000. The car occasionally has periods of poor acceleration and hesitation, sometimes stalls and has poor gas mileage. The car had a complete tune-up three months ago, the symptoms got better but did not go away. A red check engine light comes on occasionally. The poor performance happens when the light is on. Is this something I can fix myself or do I need a mechanic?

Answer:  The "check engine" light will "light" when there is a malfunction in the engine management system. The fault code is then stored in the computer. The computer must be scanned to retrieve these stored faults to pinpoint the malfunctioning component.

Question:  1989 Dodge Aries mileage: lots. How do I retime my engine and install a new timing belt? What do I do first?

Answer:  A Mitchell or Chilton auto repair manual will have diagrams showing locations of each timing marks on the sprockets. The manual also gives step-by-step instructions. Click here to find out more
