Chrysler Van Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1997 Chrysler Van My van, I guess you call it surges.  The engine rises and lowers with this vroom sound and when it lowers it sometime cuts off or if I stop at the stoplight sometimes it cuts off.  Thanks for your assistance.

Answer: If a major tune-up has not been done recently, this could be the cause of your problem.  Replace the spark plugs, plug wires, fuel and air filters, etc.  Also, replace the oxygen sensor.  Also, check EGR valve for proper operation, it may be “hanging” open.

Question: 1999 Chrysler van, mileage: 60,000. Have to replace the Heater Core and need step-by-step instructions as my hubby is an insulator not a mechanic. Any help would be very much appreciated, as I do not want to hear him moan all day about how hard it is. If the instructions are good, I will do it and make him cook and clean for a week.

Answer: In order to replace your heater core you first drain coolant from the cooling system, next, remove the heater coolant hoses, and then remove all the heater box mounting bolts (some are inside and some are in the engine compartment.) Remove the heater box (housing). You may have to loosen the dash to remove the heater box. Then disassemble the box to install the new heater core. Reverse the steps to install.

Question: 2002 Chrysler van mileage: 39,000.  The battery light suddenly came on and with a volt meter reading on the battery showing 13.5V not running and slowly drops to 12.3V when the engine is running.  I believe the alternator is not charging.  However, before I buy a rebuilt alternator could it be something else?

Answer: No, this drop in voltage is normal as the surface voltage is depleted to the regular standing voltage of the car. You still need a alternator though. Replace alternator with high quality rebuilt unit.
