Chrysler New Yorker Car Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1996 New Yorker mileage: 85,000. My cooling fan relay is bad. Can you tell me where the relay/circuit is located? I can't find a diagram or picture for the life of me. My Haynes manual shows a later model picture. There are 3 possible boxes located toward the front right under the hood of course.
Answer: It is located on the left inner finder panel in a group of relays. Counting from the left, it is the second relay.
Question: 1995 Chrysler New Yorker mileage: 155,000. Engine dies while driving. Starts again in a moment. Diagnostics have not revealed any problems. Told that situation has to get worse before trying diagnostics again. When car dies there is no warning like coughing or stuttering. All systems appear to be working. No consistent environment when it dies, like heat, cold, or driving condition. My bride says its gremlins. Any ideas? I really like this car, year and model.
Answer: We would check the pickup coil in the distributor, the engine control module that is by the battery and the fuel pump.
Question: 1995 Chrysler New Yorker mileage: 97,000. The coil does not get electricity from the battery in order to fire. Wires have been traced to fender module no problems there. Fender control module receives no elect, but has been tested by replacements nothing. More wires traced to starter/solenoid still no problems with cracked, broken or bare wires. Battery wires good and fresh charge, still nothing. Diagnostic Computer indicates no problems. Vehicles on board computer indicates a code that is related to inadequate oil pressure. However, the oil pump, filter and all sensors have been replaced (and primed) as this was thought to have been the original problem of vehicle for just shutting down at 55 mph. The vehicle had died out once before rounding a turn (oil pressure gauge came on with the loss of power indicator) but fired right back up. This time it is down for the count and no one can explain why. Just one more note. The fender mounted computer module and the module located on passenger side inside cabin have both been swapped in/out in order to check them. Again, this is a defiant piece of machinery I'm working with and any help you can offer IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Answer: Check the ignition switch as it may not be working properly or possibly the ignition pick-up coil in the distributor may be faulty.
Question: 1992 Chrysler New Yorker mileage: Sir: my question is the following: I have this 1992 Chrysler New Yorker and since a couple of months ago I been having problems with the timing...I replace the entire distributor, rotor cap, rotor, ignition coil, plugs and wires and fuel pump and I have tried to time the car with the timing gun. But, some days the car won't start at all, unless I move a little to either side the distributor and sometimes it won't start not even like that. I have done most of the troubleshooting tips from the book of this car make and model and I'm coming to the conclusion that the timing chain must be at fault. But, I would like some advise from pros like you guys. If I'm missing something to check, can you please also tell me the degrees at which the timing should be set and the proper procedure to set it on timing? This is for me to know if I'm doing everything right.
Answer: In view of all the "fixes" you have done, it probably is the timing chain that is causing your troubles. Remove the front timing chain cover and if it is the timing chain, you will discover a loose chain.
Question: 1996 Chrysler New Yorker mileage: 144,000. Engine dies at any speed, or throttle position, followed by restart die out. I have had computer replaced, fuel pump replaced, ignition switch replaced. Assorted sensors and wires have also been replaced with the problem persisting. This is an intermittent problem, which only occurs about once a week, or less. However, when it occurs at 70 mph on the freeway, it could be very dangerous. I've had it to numerous garages, and no mechanic seems to know what the problem is. Including the Chrysler dealer in town. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have.
Answer: You need to have your scanned you computer? Your car is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system. The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components.
Question: 1995 Chrysler New Yorker mileage: 70,000. I’m having a problem getting the right information I need on a simple turn signal/hazard flasher. I took what I thought was the turn signal/hazard flasher to the local parts store and was told it was a relay for the flasher, but know one could tell me what the flasher was or were it could be located. According to my Haynes auto book what they say is a relay, the book says flasher. Please advice on what type of flasher and the location and the best way to get to it. Thank you.
Answer: The relay is the flasher and is only available from a Chrysler dealer.
Question: 1994 Chrysler New Yorker 3.5 mileage: 83,000. Air Conditioner: My AC operates well while my mechanic is checking it out. R-134 checked, and all pressures checked out, recycles normally. Problem is when I get it on the road after a few miles it stops blowing cold air, Occasionally after driving farther it will start operating OK again. My mechanic is baffled. Can you give me some advice?
Answer: It seems from what you have described that there may be moisture in the Freon. Drain and vacuum the system and recharge with new Freon.
Question: 1996 Chrysler New Yorker mileage: 87,000. I can't find where the radiator cooling fan switch is located. The parts store computer says location unavailable. It is probably right in front of me, but I cannot find it. Any information would be appreciated.
Answer: The radiator cooling fan switch is located in the bottom radiator tank.
Question: 1996 Chrysler New Yorker mileage: 105,000. The rebuilt transmission has approximately 7,000 miles. The company that rebuilt the transmission is now out of business. The problem I now have is the transmission does not have any reverse. All other gears are working normal. The parking gear works also the neutral. All forward gears shift in the right places. If the transmission has to be removed and rebuilt how much do you estimate this will cost? Is there any other way to determine what the problem is, without having to drop the transmission? Incidentally, the motor has been rebuilt and has approximately 10,000 miles on it. Much appreciated for your advice.
Answer: Not good news. We think you may need another transmission overhaul. The price may be more than before if parts inside the transmission are damaged.
Question: 1992 Chrysler New Yorker The factory installed alarm system is tripped. It will not reset/clear. Have tested all the contacts and sensors and even replaced the alarm module, still not working and is disabling the car. Power is pulsing and the engine is disabled through the body computer. Please help me find a repair or means to disable it. I have tried and it has at least 4 power feeds trough fuses feeding other items.
Answer: (1). Try locking and unlocking the drivers side door with the key. (The lock has a sensor in it to disarm the alarm system.) (2). You cannot bypass the alarm. It is integrated into the vehicles computer circuits.
