Chrysler 5th Avenue Repair Questions
Question: 1998 Chrysler 5th Avenue mileage: 50,000. My car doesn't change to 2nd or 3rd gear when driving. The speedometer doesn't indicate speed. I had the problem once before when the car was still under warranty and the dealer said they replaced a sensor (I believe). What controls the speedometer and shift changes?
Answer: The sensor that is probably bad is the vehicle speed sensor located in the transmission.
Question: 1996 Chrysler 5th Avenue mileage: 49,000. I have a 4 cylinder 2.5L Chrysler that has sat since about 89 or '90 without running. The engine is seized with rust I assume. The camshaft has some movement, the crank does not. I have tried soaking the cylinders with plenty of liquid wrench with no luck. The bolt on the crankshaft is too small to get any real torque on in. Any good suggestions? The only idea I have next is to drop the pan and try to gently tap the crank/connecting rods with a soft mallet to see if I can get things to break free. Is this a good idea?
Answer: From what you have told us, you should remove the engine and have it rebuilt. If you succeed in freeing up the engine, the piston rings will be stuck to the pistons and you will have very low if any compression and high oil usage.
Question: 1997 Chrysler 5th Avenue mileage: 51,000. The power steering pump started leaking at 41,000
miles and we had it replaced. After about 2,000 miles of driving the alternator went out. This car has a generator according to what I could read on line. The generator was replaced along with the battery and the cable harness assembly due to corrosion. About a month later the battery light came on again. She took it to the dealer and they replaced the generator and did a couple of diagnostic tests and said the computer has no faults listed. She insisted that the computer needed to be replaced because she also had strange lights turning on with no inputs from her, turn signals, fog lights, dash lights. They of course said that the diagnostic tests showed nothing and that it would be fine. Well, here we are about three weeks later and low and behold the battery light comes on again. She has left the car at a different dealer now and I am very curious to see what they said. They have already said that the diagnostic tests showed no faults to include the battery light coming on, which the mechanic witnessed. I have worked on helicopters for the last twenty years and also race go karts and a highly modified BMW 2002 Ti. I am not a know it all, but from what I can see online of the wiring diagram, the voltage regulator is inside the PCM (Chrysler term for the computer). I would think this is the place to look, but it seems the dealer's don't want to admit that it has a bad PCM. I am frustrated at the situation because I am here in Korea and there is no family in the immediate area to help her. I worry that she will break down in the middle of nowhere and so on. Thanks for your input.
Answer: This is a classic example of what happens when a budget alternator is installed. Make sure only top quality replacement parts are installed. Sometimes these parts cost a little more but to avoid frustration it is worth it. If the alternator that has been install is top quality is our opinion is that you have a main control module or PCM that is failing.

Chrysler 5th Avenue Repair Questions
Question: 1995 Chrysler 5th Avenue mileage: 38,000. Not much heat. Return line from heater core is cool, input line is hot. Tap water flows through core well, even ran CRL through. Flushed system, changed stat, and even pump. Ran without thermostat, no better. Since there is no control valve and this has climate control, I don't know if it has an electronic problem or the core is still a problem. Looks like replacing the core is a complete dash removal. Can't find information on this type of system.
Answer: Test for a partially plugged heater core by testing the flow of coolant through the heater core. If it flows through easily then the problem is more than likely in the electronic heater controls or a stuck blend door.
Question: 1995: Chrysler Fifth Ave. How does heater core come out?
Answer: Remove the heater duct from under the right side of the dash and disassemble to remove the heater core.
Question: 1993 Chrysler Fifth Avenue. The fuse for the inside lights blows, and when it doesn't, the dome light won't go out; same for door lights.
Answer: The cigarette lighter shorting out may cause the blown fuse problem. Try turning or twisting the headlight switch knob to turn on and off the interior lights.
