Chevy Silverado Truck Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1998 Chevy Silverado mileage: 104,000. Recently did tune up everything was fine for a couple of days. Driving along engine quit. Replaced rotor, plugs, filters, set timing, during tune up. Engine now turns over fine but does not appear to be firing. Checked out what I had done and seems to be fine. Suspect coil maybe, any help would be great.
Answer: Check for 12 volts to the distributor. If there is 12 volts, the ignition module may be faulty.
Question: 1992 Chevy Silverado pickup mileage: 103,800. My air conditioner needs to be re-charged. It has the old type Freon so it needs to have the new type put in. Problem is my local garage said the manufacturer (GM) recommends not doing this. But their computer tech manual gaveno reason why. Why does GM recommend not doing this? If I have it done, will it cause problems with the AC unit? If I can't have the new style Freon put in where would I find the old type (I don't think it's made anymore)?
Answer: Your vehicle can be changed over to the new type of Freon (134a). However, you must remove as much of the old compressor oil as possible first and replace it with the new type compressor oil before adding the new Freon. Compression failure could result if this procedure is not followed.
Question: 1998 Chevy C1500 Silverado mileage: 120,000. Carpros, recently I have replaced distributor cap, wires, plugs, alternator [alternator twice], Freon dyer & ac condenser also I have had the timing and fuel pressure checked and the battery checked and rechecked [all by mechanics although in different shops at different times over the last few months] the problem I am having seems to be in idle where the engine will almost die but come back when given gas to accelerate [constant problem] also just recently my wife was driving to work stopped at a gas station and when she went to leave the truck would not start or even try to turn over in fact the only sign of any electrical supply was a very faint buzz when the key was placed into the ignition switch. I cannot get the truck cranked even with trying to jump-start. If ya'll have any tips or suggestions, I would be very grateful.
Answer: Have the battery load tested again or if you have a battery you can replace it with, that might be better yet. Your battery may have an internal short that does not show up on a load test. In addition, check the ignition switch, it may be faulty causing your problem.
Question: 1995 Chevrolet Silverado mileage: 59,000. I thought that it was 1996 and up, but I cannot figure out how to adjust the timing on my 1995 TBI 350. What's the trick? Thanks
Answer: No trick – it is not adjustable. The timing is controlled by the computer with the knock sensor.
Question: 1997 Chevy Silverado x-cab mileage: 56,000. My truck seems to have developed several problems at one time. The tach and speedometer quit working and the transmission (electronically controlled 4 speed auto) seems to be in 2nd or 3rd gear when you take off. Is there any relationship between these problems that seem to have happened all at the same time?
Answer: The ignition switch may be causing your problem. Just the other day, we had a Chevy truck with the same symptoms and replacing the ignition switch did the trick.
Question: 1994 2500 Chevy Silverado 6.5 turbo diesel mileage: 155,000. Engine stalls when traveling. This happens occasionally. When engine stalls, pull over and turn ignition off. I then turn ignition on and start the vehicle and proceed to drive away. Occasionally I will only put transmission in neutral when stall occurs, restart engine, and continue. There has been no problem-starting engine at any time. The trouble codes come out as 35, 36, 39, 68, 78; there is no code 12. Hope you can be of assistance.
Answer: Code 35 is injector pulse with error (short). Code 36 is injector pulse with error (long). Code 39 is TCC stuck off (transmission). Code 68 is overdrive ratio error. Code 78 is waste gate solenoid fault.
Question: 1996 Chevy Silverado Vortec mileage: 34,000. We bought a 1996 Chevy Silverado Z71 a couple of months ago; we noticed that we can hear it shifting from 2-3 on the up shift. When we took it in the garage, we were told that this is normal for this transmission. Something they called driveline clunk. We also hear a clunk when the accelerated is pushed and then released real fast.
Answer: The slip joint in the driveline may need to be lubricated. In addition, the differential may have excessive wear.
Question: Chevy Silverado mileage: 67,000. My brake lights do not work. The rear lights or the cab brake light. I noticed a fuse was tripped and I replaced, but the brakes still do not work. The same fuse has the hazard lights and those do work. I removed the rear light cover, and all three bulbs do work. Signal work, hazards work, and reverse lights work. I do not see any loose wires or bad grounds. Is there a sensor or flasher exclusively for the break lights? All other electrical controls work. I do have electric brakes, which were installed for a trailer, but I do not use them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: Check the brake light switch on the brake pedal. It may be out of adjustment or just plain faulty.
Question: 2002 Chevrolet Silverado, 100,000 miles. Is there anyway to remove the crankshaft without removing the engine or the transmission first? I have everything torn apart and I was planning on dropping it out with the flywheel attached, but I seem to be catching on the torque converter (automatic transmission). I am guessing that the crank protrudes slightly into the center of the torque converter, but I didn't think so. I had the transmission out 4 months ago and I am not looking forward to pulling it out again to get my crankshaft turned.
Answer: Yes, it is possible to get the crankshaft out without pulling the transmission. Remove the two lower transmission bell housing bolts and install two longer bolts (approximately 4" long) remove the remaining bolts. Remove the bolt that holds the cross member to the frame and slide the transmission back approximately one inch.
