Chevy S10 Truck Repair Questions and Answers

MORE: Chevy S-10 Repair Questions

Question: 1996 S10 Chevy truck mileage: 63,000.  How do I remove the fan/clutch from my truck? It does not have four bolts, instead it is held in place by one large nut that screws on to the water pump shaft.  There is no way to hold the water pump shaft still to loosen the fan/clutch.

Answer: It sounds as if you have removed the fan belt.  If you have, reinstall the belt and use it to hold the pulley as you loosen the fan clutch nut.

Question: 1998 Chevrolet S-10 mileage: 68,000.  Truck has 68,000 original miles.  When I come to a stop, the truck acts like it wants to die, then will suddenly idle back up. I had a diagnostic performed, which availed to nothing noted.  Plugs were changed; fuel filter, EGR, and I think the distributor cap.  After all of this was replaced, still has the same problem.  The truck seems to have lost power especially at top in. Could there be a problem with the catalytic converter?  And if so, how can I test it to see if that's the problem?  Thanks!

Question: Two things could be causing your problem, one being the catalytic converter and the other, a failing fuel pump.  To test for a plugged converter, drill a small hole in the exhaust pipe right before the catalytic converter.  Install a temporary hose fitting and attach a long rubber hose and a 0 to 10 pound pressure gauge. With the gauge inside the car, drive up a hill or accelerate and read the pressure.  Normal is 2 to 3 pounds, restricted 4 pounds or higher.  The drawback to this method is the small hole will need to be welded shut after the test; a minor job if you have a welder.

Question: 1995 Chevy S10  mileage: 108,006.  I was driving down the road and all of my gauges started going crazy.  After a few minutes everything went dead, my lights, windshield wipers, gauges, everything. But the truck still runs. It loses some power and when you turn it off, then turn it back on the battery gauge reads about 9.  It is a brand new battery and alternator.  What do I need to do?

Answer: From what you tell us, it sounds like you may be having trouble with your charging system.  Have your battery load tested and check the alternator output for voltage and amperage.

Question: 1998 Chevy s10  mileage: 112,808.  I've replaced dist, cap button, plugs, wires and module and I still have pop through the throttle body like sticking points in old cars.  I have no codes to tell me what the problem is.  It mostly pops at cruising speeds like overdrive.

Answer: Do a compression check to make sure you do not have a weak cylinder.  Also, check the valve train for any worn or broken parts.  Check the fuel pump pressure and change the fuel filter.

Question: 1999 Chevy S-10 mileage: 80,000.  It has a 4.3 V6 with TBI system and no AC.  It is in excellent over all condition.  Recently I began to have acceleration problems.  It runs great when cold and sometimes even when heats up.  But most of the time, once it warms up, it pops and sputters on acceleration.  I can't figure it out.  Fuel pump weak after warm-up!  Fuel regulator valve!  Electrical!  I hope you can help.

Answer: Your car may be ready for a major tune-up including spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter and air filter.  Also, perform a fuel pump pressure test.  Clean fuel injection system including throttle bore, idle speed control motor and passages.  If problem still exists, scan computer for trouble codes.

Question: 1998 Chevy s10 pickup  mileage: 40,000.  I have reviewed your FAQ's and don't see this addressed: My son has had the exhaust system on his Chevy S10 modified.  They installed some type of smaller muffler and dual pipes with tips.  It sounds loud and runs poorly.  Engine is missing.  Can this exhaust modification be the cause of the misfiring?  Do not like the loud sound, is probably illegal anyway...please advise.

Answer: If in modifying the exhaust the oxygen sensor that is in the exhaust pipe was disconnected or disturbed, the truck will definitely not run properly.

Question: 1998 Chevy S10 2.5 mileage: 70,400.  Can you guide me on how to change a clutch?

Answer: We are sorry, but due to the large volume of questions we receive, we do not have time to print, scan and email diagrams.  A Mitchell or Chilton auto repair manual will have diagrams showing how to change a clutch.   The manuals also give step-by-step instructions.  Visit our repair manuals page for more information.

Question: 1998 Chevy s10 4x4 2.8 mileage: 146,000.  I have a 88 Chevy s10 4x4 pickup. When I turn right or left it makes a popping or knot type noise under it. Its loud I was told or I hear that it could be the torsion bar mounts. Is that true?

Answer: We think that your front CV joints may be wore out.

Question: 1995 Chevy S-10 Pickup V 6 mileage: 115,000.  I was told that my Clutch fluid was low but they couldn't add any.  Where would this be checked and filled? I'd like to do it myself but don't know where it is.

Answer: The clutch master is under the hood on the firewall to the left of the brake master cylinder.

Question: 1997 Chevy s10. The truck was purchased for our son has new engine and new carburetor. The check engine light is on and the code reads 41 and 24 we know the speed sensor but what could the 41 be for it is not in the book? We had someone look at it and he mentioned distributor reference voltage and hall effect something called HEI. Make some suggestions please and if youre wondering I am not the one doing the work thank goodness.

Answer: Replacing the distributor with a rebuilt unit will probably solve your problems.

Question: 1999 Chevy S10 Pickup mileage: 86,545. What would cause me not to get heat for my Def or heater, I have the proper fluids in my coolant system, but I do smell antifreeze when the engine is warm. My temp gauge is always around 210 or lower. Could this be as simple as my Thermostat, or something more serious? I would appreciate any possible links that I could check out myself. The only possible heat I get is if everything is turned off and my temp dial is in the red, after driving for some time I can switch it to either Def or heat and I get a small exchange of heat before turning cool again.

Answer: The heater control valve is probably not opening. It controls the coolant flow from the engine through the heater hoses to the heater. The valve may be stuck or the vacuum hose may not be attached.

Question: 1994 Chevrolet S10. I just need to know the torque specification and sequence for the cylinder head bolts.

Answer: A Mitchell or Chilton auto repair manual will have diagrams showing the torque specification and sequence for the cylinder head bolts. The manuals also give step-by-step instructions.

Question: 1996 Chevy S-10 mileage: 57,000: When traveling down the interstate the engine stops and will not restart. After some discussion with backyard mechanics -conclusion is timing chain. After dismantling the engine it is found the chain did not break, but rather one of the plastic shoes on the timing chain tensioner had come loose and been picked up in the crank gear, causing the timing to jump. After replacing the old parts with a new one and aligning the marks with each other, truck will still not start. Could anything else have happen when it jump time that Im not aware of. Any suggestion? Thank you.

Answer: Do a compression check of the engine. A valve or two may have gotten bent when the chain "jumped."

Question: 1986 Chevy S-10 mileage: 175,000. My 1986 Chevy S-10 sometimes does not want to start, when it does like today, it sputters. Today is a rainy day and I am not sure that has anything to do with it, but it seems to. What could it be?

Answer: The first thing to check would be ignition system. Moisture on old spark plug wires or distributor cap and rotor will short them out. Next would be the carburetor choke.
