Chevy Monte Carlo Car Repair Questions and Answers

MORE: Chevy Monte Carlo Repair Questions

Question: 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo mileage: 79,000. When the car is cold and I start it the idle goes to 2000 rpm and slowly drops to around 800 rpm then surges back and forth. It also seems to be skipping. If I let it sit for 3 or 4 minutes the service engine soon light comes on, but if I just touch the gas it goes off. I took it to be repaired but they couldn't find any computer codes so they cleaned and rebuilt the throttle body but it didn't help. I brought it back two more times and they replaced the 02 sensor and the EGR valve and the problem is still there. It runs fine once it's warmed up.

Answer: We suspect a faulty idle speed motor. If not done recently, a major tune up, including plug wires is in order here.

Question: 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo mileage: 25,000. I have been led to believe that Automatic and Manual Front Wheel TRANSMISSION and Automatic and Manual TRANSAXLE are the same thing. Please tell me if the dealership is trying to pull a fast one on me regarding an extended warranty.

Answer: The transaxle includes the transmission, final drive gears and differential.

Question: 1992 Monte Carlo (Chevy) 4.3 mileage: 135,000. The car started stalling at take off and we had to use the brake and gas to keep it from dying. It dies in the driveway and will not idle on its own. We did the scan key and it said 34 & 33 so we bought a new map sensor and now it wont even start with that new map sensor. What could be wrong? When we put the old map sensor in it will start but won't idle.

Answer: Check for a plugged catalytic converter.

Question: 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo mileage: 100,200. What does the EGR valve in my car do and does it affect performance?

Answer: EGR stands for exhaust gas recycling valve. During cruising speeds, the valve opens allowing exhaust into the intake manifold. The purpose of this is to cool the temperature of the combustion inside the cylinder as the spark plug fires. This in turn, lowers emissions.

Question: 1984 Chevy Monte Carlo mileage: 155,050. I am having trouble with adjustments to the following three items; rich mixture stop screw, lean mixture screw setting, and the voltage for the TPS throttle position sensor. While trying to adjust the carburetor the catalytic converter retain a lot of heat, enough heat and fume to make it cherry hot. Your help will be much appreciated.

Answer: Check the air diverter valve. A Mitchell auto repair manual will have diagrams showing carburetor adjustments. The manuals also give step-by-step instructions. Get instant access to your vehicles drive belt routing, wiring diagrams, trouble code information and other available updates and factory bulletins.

Question: 1996 Chevy Monte Carlo mileage: 148,000. When I start my car up in the morning, it idles very high and takes a while until it seems to idle down. Someone told me that the timing chain needs to be replaced. What do you think?

Answer: We do not think it is the timing chain. In 1986, Chevrolet made Monte Carlos with both carburetors and fuel injection. We are assuming your car is carburetor equipped. Check the choke and choke unloader, it may be the problem.

Question: 1993 Chevrolet Monte Carlo mileage: 113,000. I have a fair knowledge of cars. My problem is my car’s vacuum hoses. A relative at no charge gave the car to me. When I received the car, it had no vacuum hoses on it. The car will start and run, but not very well. I bought a Haynes repair manual for it, but I could not find any help for the hoses. My father said to find a car with the same hose pattern and match it. I have not found one yet. Can you suggest any help for this problem?

Answer: Some cars have a "road map" of the vacuum hoses. The "map" is on the underside of the hood. The online repair manuals will give you instant access to your vehicles vacuum diagrams, trouble code information and other available updates and factory bulletins.
