Chevy Truck Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1997 CHEVY K1500 mileage: 72,000.  A couple of weeks ago the truck had problems starting, then died in flight. Now the truck has no spark, no MIL and no data when scanning did find a wiring harness rubbing on the harmonic balancer and a broken ground wire at the fuel pump.  (REPAIRED)  The customer did that when replacing his own pump, sock and relay.  I’m thinking computer but I don't have the information to test the VCM or DLC.

Answer: Check the ignition switch your problem may be a bad contact inside the switch.

Question: 1999 Chevy 1500 mileage: 100,000.  Periodically the dash brake like flashes a code and will not go away until I disconnect the connectors to the brake module next to the fluid reservoir.  The code is 8 short flashes followed by one longer flash.  This continues until I disconnect the cables.   The brake fluid levels appear fine.  The pads and shoes look fine.  I don't see any leaks in the system.  I have not been able to tie the start of the flashing to any specific incident such as hitting the brakes hard.  Any hints?  I assume the flashing code means something.  The truck brakes fine.  Thanks

Answer: The code you read on the brake light would indicate a faulty brake dump valve.

Question: 1998 Chevy truck  mileage: 95,000.   Replaced engine has about 200 miles on it and computer was replaced recently.  Has fuel injection.  Engine has started random surging (especially when cold outside), sometimes while being driven and other times on startup.  Truck has to be shut off and then won't restart (starter and battery are fine).  I didn't see any references to surging in other fuel injector, pump or filter solutions.  The dealer can't help, as there are no computer codes showing.  Any advise?

Answer: Check the fuel pump pressure and for a plugged catalytic converter.  It is a good practice to replace the oxygen sensor.

Question: 1997 Chevy Truck mileage: 110,000.  My fuel pump is not working. The fuse is ok.  I put in a new relay.  With connection at the pump disconnected and ignition on, a test lamp on the middle prong glows but it is very faint.  Could it be a partially broken wire and is there another way to test the pump before having to drop the gas tank?

Answer: If there is 12-volts going to the fuel pump and it is not running, the pump is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Question: 1998 Chevrolet c/k 1500 mileage: 19,000.  After sitting overnight, start truck’s engine.  While warming up, engine starts knocking (after approximately 3-4 minutes).  It does this each and every day.  After pouring some "prolong engine treatment" into engine, knocking became less pronounced, but is still present.  If left running longer, it eventually disappears, or I am unable to hear it.  Any help would be appreciated, and hope to hear from you soon.  Thanks, Bart

Answer: It sounds like valve train noise which is normal with your engine since it has roller lifters.

Question: 1995 Chevy K1500 mileage: 0.  I have installed a crate 5.7L Vortec in my 1995 K1500.  I used an Edelbrock Performer manifold, a TBI adapter and my original sensors, except for the EGR.  I am having trouble setting the timing.  It "spits and sputters" at low end under normal acceleration.  I have to floor it to get it past the flat spot.  I have set the timing by ear, because it is very rough at TDC.  The timing is very advanced right now.  Do you have any suggestions?  Could it be the MAP sensor?  How do you test it?  Can you give me the proper procedure for installing the distributor?  There is no "white" line and there is no "8" stamped on the base.  Are there any other modifications that you would recommend?

Answer: Your car is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system.  An independent auto service center can scan your computer for fault or error codes.  The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components.

Question: 1997 Chevy.  Pick Up 4WD mileage: 58,000.  I need to tow my pickup behind my motor home.  Is their anything I can do so I can tow it?

Answer: Some type of disconnect for the drive shaft is recommended.  Transmission failure will result if a car or truck is towed for extended mileage without the engine running to pump transmission fluid to all internal parts.

Question: 1993 Chevy c10 pickup 2wd mileage: 72,000. When I am driving on a road with a lot of hills or curves sometimes my service engine light comes on It seems to only effect the brake system as there is no noticeable engine change, except when I shut the motor off it will keep running for a few seconds. After about 5 minutes, I can restart with no problems. I have also had the light come on at highway speeds with the same effect. I took it to my mech. and he tried to use his analyzer on it but it would not compute. The message came back no connection possible. He said he would have to replace the computer to find out what the problem was. This seems to be an expensive way to find the problem.

Answer: We would suggest taking your truck to a different repair center to have them scan the computer. Your problem may be as simple as a loose ground wire. It could also be a failing computer.
