Chevy Truck Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1998 Chevy 1500 mileage: 104,500. I just changed my plugs and wires and I did it one by one (took off one wire then the plug, put new plug back in then the new wire) and I’m positive that it is in the right order and I started it after I got done and it would idle and rev up fine but when I took it out for a ride and got on the gas it started miss-firing so I got out to make sure that nothing was loose and everything was fine. It baffled me so I ask a few other people and they didn’t know, I wanted to see what you thought about my truck.
Answer: You possibly picked up some grease on the end of the new spark plug when you were installing it which would cause a misfire. In addition, we always recommend installing original equipment spark plugs and plug wires.
Question: 1997 Chevrolet k1500 truck 4x4 mileage: 100,000. Hey guys here's the deal, using my Haynes manual I trouble shot my problem, truck won't start. Found that fuel pump was not initially turning on at accessory, before ignition. Replaced internal fuel pump, fuel pump turned on, and the truck started right up. Next morning went to work about 6-7 miles, drove home after work, drove to the store and truck died while turning into store, but started right back up. I parked and when I came back out, truck would not start, noticed no sound of fuel pump turning on, kept trying and then it worked and truck stared. Then died on the way out of parking lot, would not restart so I had it towed back home. Now if I leave the truck sitting for a while it might start like in the morning, but only run for like ten minutes then start right back up, but die a little later. I have shook the truck while running to see if maybe it's a loose wire, but it keeps running, and also my air bag light is on, but not willing to risk having to get truck towed again to make it to the dealership. Can my air bag circuit be turning my fuel pump off? Or do I have a different problem. Thanks for taking my question, guys...from one puzzled mechanic.
Answer: Initially, the airbag light should not stop the fuel pump from working. We would first check the fuel pump relay then check to see if the new fuel pump is faulty. Also, be aware that some Chevy trucks around 1997 had bad ignition switches
Question: 1999 Chevrolet Truck 1 ton Mileage: 50,000. I drove home from 400 mile trip without any problems except the speedometer and odometer would not work. The next time I tried to start it, the engine started fine, but when I put it in gear it would not move. I have checked to make sure the emergency (automatic brake) is released by jacking up the rear wheels and spinning them freely with the selector switch in neutral. No problem. I did find that there had been several fuses, not blown, but the plastic part of the fuses had melted. I have replaced these fuses and there has not been a problem with them since, but I still cannot move the vehicle with the engine. The engine does not stall when I put it from "Park" to "Drive" and I can feel the transmission engaging (I think.) I checked the 10 amp transmission fuse with it in gear and it appears to be solid.
Answer: The speedometer/odometer probably quit working due to failure of a speed sensor in the transmission. This usually happens when excess heat is present. A failed sensor however, is not the reason the motor home won’t move. We assume your transmission is equipped with overdrive which has most likely failed. Using low gear, see if the motor home will move. If it moves in low gear, the overdrive has failed. If it won’t move in low gear, the entire transmission has failed.
Question: 2002 Chevy 2-wd 1500 mileage: 106,000. Hey guys, I have a new motor, complete new pads, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, and I can't get a pedal, tried everything! My brakes don't work.
Answer: Sounds like you have air in the brake system. Try removing the master cylinder, "bench bleeding" it and then reinstall it and bleed the entire system. If the low pedal still persists, try replacing the rear anti-lock brake valve.
Question: 1997 Chevy pickup mileage: 180,000. My truck seams to keep idling high and low when it is cold. When it warms up it gets a little better. The check engine light keeps coming on and keeps giving me the codes to change my oxygen censor and code 44. I have changed both and it keeps giving me these codes. What could be my problem?
Answer: Check the fuel pressure as it may be low caused by a plugged filter or a weak fuel pump.
Question: 1999 Chevy 2500 mileage: 57,000. Truck ran just fine until I hooked up a 24ft gooseneck trailer to it to pull in a parade. I made it 5 or 6 blocks and when I came to a stoplight, it died. The coil was somewhat hot so I replaced it. This didn't help. I then changed the ECM that came off a buddies wrecked truck. Again no luck. I've checked all the fuses and wiring, everything seems fine. The engine turns over but won't fire. Checked the TBI, I have fuel in tank, but none to the TBI. No fuel and no fire. Can you help me?
Answer: Check for fuel pressure as it sounds like your fuel pump has failed.
Question: 1996 Chevy 2500 Pickup mileage: 75,000. I recently purchased a standard light kit from Petersen. The kit came with no instructions, but I've wired trailer lights before. However, I have a problem I can't diagnose. Hopefully you can recommend a trouble shooting procedure. The trailer is a small utility trailer, the towing vehicle an Chevy pickup with the Cheyenne trim package. On the truck side, the yellow wire is the left turn signal, the brown, the tail/marker lights. The deeper green wire is the right turn signal and a lighter green wire to the tail light assembly is the backup light feed, and has no bearing on my application. Ground has been established by tying into the frame with the white wire. The trailer connections were made with the yellow to the left turn signal, the dark green to the right turn signal, and the brown wire feeding both rear tail and front marker/running lights. With the truck's parking lights off, I get all turn and brake signals functioning ok at the trailer end. Tail lights work when I switch on the truck lights. Yet, when the truck's headlights/parking lights are on, and I apply the brakes, the trailer taillights go out. I've triple checked all connections for tightness and correct wiring. All lights, harnesses and connections are new. I'd appreciate any help in suggestions for additional troubleshooting. Thanks
Answer: It sounds like your ground wire is not making a good connection.
Question: 1994 Chevy 3500 6.5L diesel mileage: 80,000. Charging system is unable to handle loads (night driving specifically). Will not provide 14 volts with headlights on. New alternator and both batteries. Any idea what might be wrong? Is there a fuse wire in the supply side of the alternator?
Answer: Your problems alternator be caused by poor ground connections or improper belt tension. Also, have the "bench-tested" to be sure that it is working properly.
Question: 1995 Chevrolet P/U mileage: 165,000. Fuel pump will not run. Voltage check at pump indicates 12 volts when ignition is first turned on, but then quickly drops to 0 volts. Fuel pump relay and fuse have been changed. Any suggestions?Answer: From what you have described, it sounds like you have a bad fuel pump.
Question: 1966 Chevy pickup SW step side mileage: 175,000 Guys, I've just replaced the plugs and wires on my engine and now there is a loud popping through the left side exhaust as you look at the engine. If I leave off the last plug, wire to the back cylinder the popping stops. Do I have a number of wire crossed or what? It’s also been a very long time since I've worked on an engine and I'm a little rusty. If in your answer, I need to check the plug wires to insure they are wired right I need to know where #1 is on the distributor. Thanks, Hutch
Answer: Do a compression check on the engine; you may find the compression low on the problem cylinder. Obviously double check that the spark plug wires are connected correctly. As for telling you which one is #1, that is impossible from our vantage point. Because, on a 1966 vehicle, you can bet the distributor has been removed and turned and the plug wires adjusted to suit the situation. The fact that the engine runs means you must be extremely close on all the plug wires. Just verify that the firing order is 1–8–4–3–6–5-7-2.
