Chevy Cheyenne Truck Repair Questions and Answers

MORE: Chevy Cheyenne Repair Questions

Question: 1995 Chevy Cheyenne mileage: 103,800. My air conditioner needs to be re-charged. It has the old type refrigerant so it needs to have the new type put in. Problem is my local garage said the manufacturer recommends not doing this. But their computer tech manual gave no reason why. Why does GM recommend not doing this? If I have it done, will it cause problems with the AC unit? If I can't have the new style refrigerant put in where would I find the old type? (I don't think it's made anymore)

Answer: Your vehicle can be changed over to the new type of refrigerant (134a). However, you must remove as much of the old compressor oil as possible first and replace it with the new type compressor oil before adding the new refrigerant. Compression failure could result if this procedure is not followed.

Question: 1998 Chevy Cheyenne mileage: 92,000.  The alternator was not charging I had new brushes put in.  Since then, once in awhile the alternator will go to full charge and the lights will get over bright.  Some say it is the voltage regulator but we cannot find it.  It is not in the alternator and it is not on the firewall some say it's built into the computer.  It only does it once in awhile but I'm afraid it is going to burn out my headlights when it does it.  Thank for your help

Answer: If the alternator armature was not resurfaced at the time of brush installation there is no way for the alternator brushes to mate squarely to the connector ring and inhibiting the operation. Replace the alternator with a top quality unit.

Question: 1997 Chevy Cheyenne mileage: 106,000. I first noticed that it was hesitating during acceleration, and that it was "bucking" while driving down the road. I thought the fuel pump had gone week, so I replaced it. While this helped, the problem persisted. I gave it a full tune up, wire, cap and rotor, plugs, fuel filter, and it was all done with factory parts. All of my hoses are tight, and the only thing I can think of that is left, is either a compression problem, which I doubt seeing as it came on suddenly, and not gradually with time, or the EGR valve, which as far as I can tell is still working properly. I have tried an injector cleaner, and nothing. I reviewed the FAQ's, but none of them seemed to specify my persisting problem. What do you think the problem could be? I have been working on this truck, making it perfect, for way too long to let this stop me.

Answer: The first thing we would look at would be the Mass Air Flow Sensor or the fuel pump is weak. Scan the data stream information going to the computer to verify the values of each component.

Question: 1996 Chevy Cheyenne mileage: 128,000.  I have a question concerning the knock in my engine.  I was driving down the road this weekend when I had a sudden drop in oil pressure and my engine had this awful knock.  I took it to Napa and pulled the lifter and push rod and the one I suspected was not bent.  I think it might be a flat cam or I threw a bearing what do you think? It still starts up but it sounds awful. I am going to buy a master rebuild kit today and I am going start as soon as possible. I am just pulling the engine; any pointers on what I will need to rebuild the engine, I have a Chilton’s manual and a lot of tools just want to get a head start on what I need before I have to run back and forth to the parts store.

Answer: You probably “spun” a rod bearing.  A total rebuild would be best rather than just a crank kit.  When a rod bearing fails, it spreads metal pieces throughout the rest of the engine.
