Chevy Celebrity Car Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1985 Chevy Celebrity mileage: 100,000. I changed the right side motor mount because it was bad. Really Bad! (I noticed a slice in the boot next to the spindle). Now there is a grinding noise on the same side the motor mount was on and I wanted to know if I should change: 1) Just the boot or boots? 2) Boots and CV joints? 3) All of the above and the drive shaft? I have not yet taken it apart but I "think" that the CV joints are bad.

Answer: It appears from what you have told us that the CV joints are bad. If you replace the axle shafts, they will come with new CV joints and boots.

Question: 1988 Chevy Celebrity mileage: 289,652 My speedometer kicks out and my engine check light comes on causing my Celebrity to occasionally stall. When I restart the engine, it surges and then runs smoothly. The speedometer turns off and comes back on minutes later and at that moment the car stalls. When I restart the engine, it runs fine. This is happening on a regular basis.

Answer: Check the vehicle speed sensor as it may have failed.

Question: 1986 Chevrolet Celebrity Euro mileage: 194,000 One day I was driving down the road and all of a sudden, I lost power in my car; the only way to keep the car running was to have the gas pedal pressed down. My car still has the same problem and it surges. However, some days I can drive the car just fine and the next day I cannot get out of my driveway. Scanners pick up no codes and 4 mechanics have looked at my car, even a tune-up specialist. The computer has been replaced but not the PROM - new oxygen sensor - new coolant sensor - EGR replaced - no vacuum leaks - new fuel filter - gas tank cleaned, but the pump was not replaced - a used, but working Throttle Body has been put in - the Fuel Pump pressure and volume has been checked, but only when the car is running fine. One mechanic thinks it's the PROM and the other thinks it is the Fuel Pump. I have spent over $500 on my car; I would GREATLY APPRECIATE your help and advice. Pablo

Answer: You must determine if your engine will not start because of lack of fuel or lack of spark. If fuel is the problem, check the fuel pump, pressure etc. If no spark, check the coil, distributor, 12 volts to the coil, etc. From what you describe, we would guess it is your fuel pump.

Question: 1989 Chevy Celebrity mileage: 42,000. Both turn signals have stopped flashing on the car but the lights do go on. The emergency flashers work just fine. The fuse is OK. My Haynes manual says that the problem is probably a faulty flasher unit or switch but it does not show me the location of the flasher unit. Do you know where the flasher is located on this car? John

Answer: To the right of the steering column, clipped to the ashtray bracket.

Question: 1986 Chevy Celebrity mileage: 46,000. Engine starts but tends to die or stall out when trying to accelerate. Have changed the fuel filter, but it didn't help. A local mechanic here in Sitka, AK told me it probably needs a new carburetor - apparently, there's some kind of electronic devices in the carburetor that cannot be fixed here. He wants to charge me $500 for a new carburetor--Is it possible to get a rebuilt one somewhere for less than that? Thank you for your help-Eric

Answer: Have your mechanic check for the availability of a rebuilt carburetor. Also, your local Chevrolet dealer should have the individual parts that go in the carburetor.

Question: 1989 Chevy Celebrity mileage: 90,000. Retro fitted air conditioner to R134; do not know condition of system before retro, installed new compressor, accumulator, orifice, and seals. The compressor comes on when first started and cools fine, but if you shut it off it will not restart for a while. Jumped the two pressure switches and still no power to the compressor, is there anything else that will keep the compressor from starting? Appreciate any help. Dennie

Answer: Check the main control switch for the air conditioner.

Question: 1987 Chevy Celebrity mileage: 61,000. I have a 1987 Chevy Celebrity, that has been sitting for about 5 years. I don't know much about cars, but from what I could tell I was not getting any fuel, because the car will start, for a few seconds when I pour gasoline, into what looks to me to be the carburetor. (It is round, with a choke, and sits under the air breather, but because the car says 2.5FI on the side, I am being told the FI, stands for fuel injected, in which case the car would not have a carburetor, but it sure looks like one to me.) Anyway, I replaced the fuel pump, which definitely was faulty. I am now getting fuel almost up to what looks like a carburetor. A gas line goes to each side of it, and the line in the front gets filled with fuel. (When I unscrew it, fuel squirts out with much pressure). My problem is the fuel doesn't go anywhere. I even took off the carburetor-looking device and I can't see any place for the fuel to go. On the rear side of the carburetor looking device, small gas lines, that come from a fuel canister (located behind right headlight) line up with holes that look like they would allow fuel to pass through. Is it possible that I mixed up the lines when installing the new fuel pump? At present, I have the line that is pumping the gas attached so it will go through the fuel filter. Or could some small outlet (that is too small for me to see) be clogged, causing the fuel to be trapped in the line? All together, the car has 3 fuel lines coming from the gas tank. One goes to the front of the carburetor looking device, one goes to the back of the carburetor-looking device, and the last goes to the fuel canister. I apologize for my lack of knowledge and I hope I have explained the situation well enough for you to understand and help me.

Answer: Your car is fuel injected. The "carburetor" looking device is actually the throttle body for the fuel injection. The throttle body has two fuel lines; one in and one out and they will both be pressurized. We would guess that the fuel injectors themselves are not functioning. Either they are stuck from sitting for five years or they are not getting a pulse or signal from the computer to open. A Mitchell, Chilton, Haynes, dealer auto repair manual or a specialty repair book for your make of car will have diagrams and or specifications showing what you more about the fuel injection system. The manuals and books give step-by-step instructions. Most public libraries have the repair manuals or you can visit the Repair Manuals page for the online repair manuals. Just click the hyperlink above and then click on your make of vehicle below the books displayed.

Question: 1986 Chevy Celebrity mileage: 85,000.  Can you please tell me where the MAP sensor is for this car we are having trouble finding it and replacing it?  We have been told that it is under the fender, NOT THERE.  Thank-you

Answer: The MAP sensor is located under the right side of the engine cowl behind the shock tower.  The area may be covered so you would have to remove it to find the sensor.

Question: 1987 Chevy Celebrity mileage: 100,000.  Hello, I have an 1987 Chevy Eurosport Celebrity.  It was running rough very little power. Found low fuel pressure, so I replaced the fuel pump.  Now it runs great for approximately 5 minuets and quits.  The engine turns over but doesn't start.  It will not restart until I wait approx. 30 minuets.  When it will not restart, I jumped the computer terminals and checked for error codes = no codes found.  I'm getting fuel but no spark.  So, I replaced the electronic spark control board but not the 3 coils.  Still it runs great for approximately 5 minutes and quits.  If the computer is telling me all the sensors are good, could the 3 coils be bad or something else?

Answer: From what you have described we believe you have a PCM (computer) and prom failing.
