Chevy Camaro Repair Questions
Question: 1989 Chevy Camaro mileage: 87,000. I have backfiring thru the TBI unit problem. I have changed the EMC, TBI unit, map sensor, dist module, set the timing, and scanned the computer with my Snap-On scanner, all to no avail. There are no codes in diagnostic or driving mode. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Answer: Check for internal engine problems such as a blown head gasket, broken valve spring or rocker arm, flat cam etc.
Question: 1994 Chevrolet Camaro 3.4L/V6 mileage: 114000. This car has a five speed manual transmission. Clutch has no apparent slop (probably auto-adjusting). Fluid level is correct and has not dropped. Clutch works fine in all forward gears but gears always grind going into reverse. Doesn't matter how long the clutch is held down before shifting. This can be avoided only by shifting into reverse before starting.
Answer: You may have a warped clutch disc that does not allow the clutch to be fully disengaged.
Question: 2001 Chevy Camaro mileage: 39,000. Only once in a while, the car will idle rough, the engine will either race or run real slow and backfire, with lots of air sounds. It seems to do it more if it hasn't been run in three or four days. Other times it seems to run for days at a time without a glitch. Sometimes it seems a short trip will trigger it. Good to the store but when you come out for the trip home, upon starting it, it will act up. Could it be the o2 sensors or maybe the auto start electronics is causing a problem with the computer?
Answer: We suspect a failing fuel pump and or a plugged fuel filter.
Question: 1995 Chevy Camaro mileage: 60,000. My low-trac light is coming on in DRY weather...dealer says it's probably a wheel sensor. My husband can replace it if he knows WHERE the wheel sensors are...at least he 'thinks' he can depending on where they are. He thinks it's a front left sensor...is there a way besides connecting the car to a computer to see which one it is? Can he put a new one in and if it's not that one, put back the old one and put the new one in another place? Help...we don't want to spend $300-$400 to have the dealer do it if George can do it!
Answer: The best way to locate your problem is by scanning the computer. Any other way is kind of hit and miss. Check with the Chevrolet parts department to see if the wheel sensors are interchangeable.
Question: 1988 Camaro mileage: rebuild. I have a freshly rebuilt 350 turbo transmission with 0 miles. I have put it in 3 times after pulling it out to have the builder recheck it for the same problem. It is stuck in first gear and will not shift up. It has reverse and park. It will not manually shift nor can shift by bypassing the vacuum module (running it up in first gear then shifting manually). In addition, the governor seems to be functioning properly. Please help if you have anything else I can try or might have missed, for I am at the end of my rope. Thanks again, Jim.
Answer: Check for vacuum at the vacuum modulator with the engine running. If okay, you may have a faulty modulator.
Question: 1988 Chevy Camaro mileage: 115,000. We need to know how to tighten the pushrods one was loose and the manual is very hard to understand if you can please explain how to just tighten these it would be of great help and all so what sequence to do it in and the very easiest way thanks
Answer: With the engine running, try slowly loosening the adjustment until a valve “click” is heard. Now slowly tighten one turn.
Question: 1999 Chevy Camaro mileage: 60,000. The transmission shifts into reverse fine, and it also shifts from first to second fine, but when it shifts into drive it reacts like it was shifted into neutral. Are there sensors or something like that causing this problem? In addition, if so what are they and is there a way to check them to see if they are bad short of taking it to the shop? I changed the fluid and put a new filter and gasket in transmission and there was no difference. It has been driven very little since problem occurred. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Answer: You may have a valve “hanging up” in the valve body. Try scanning the power train control module for fault codes. The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components.
Question: 1997 Chevy Camaro mileage: 91,000. I have no acceleration between 1st and 2nd gear. It bogs down to the point that it almost stalls. It acts like it is not getting any fuel. When it’s cold it is even worse. But, after I get to 45 mph it seems to work fine. I just replaced the catalytic converter. It was bad, but that did not solve the problem. I check the airflow sensor and it works.
Answer: Your car may be ready for a major tune-up including spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter and air filter. Also, perform a fuel pump pressure test. Clean fuel injection system including throttle bore, idle speed control motor and passages. If problem still exists, scan computer for trouble codes.
Question: 1994 Chevy Camaro Z28 mileage: 104,525. When I turn off my factory alarm and try to start my car, the alarm immediately resets and I am unable to get the engine to turn over. The security light on the dash flashes. I disconnected the alarm all together yet the problem continues. Is there anything that I can do to get my car to start?
Answer: Your problem is most likely due to a faulty vehicle anti-theft module which needs to be replaced before the car will start. It is an integral part of your car and cannot be disconnected.
