Chevy Bonanza Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1986 Chevy Bonanza mileage: 58,000. It just had the carburetor rebuilt, fuel line replaced, plugs wires, rotor, distribution, cap, ignition coil, fuel tank sock replaced and now it will get warm 1/4 the way hot and the idle drops slowly at a light until it is not running. Is it the carburetor? Adjustment on it? It does have only a 2-barrel carburetor. But, it had a 2-barrel on it for years without a problem. Since carburetors rebuild this is what is going on.
Answer: Check the carburetor adjustments especially the choke, fast idle and idle speed. Check for vacuum leaks. Carburetor may be "flooding" slightly (needle and seat not sealing properly). One indication of this problem is raw gasoline dripping into the venturi (main air passage) while idling.
Question: 1987 Chevy Bonanza mileage: 128,000 I am trying to replace the heater core but I am having no luck, do I have to take out the whole dashboard? I know where it is at but just cannot get to it; I must be missing something. Your assistance would be greatly accepted, thanks.
Answer: Each year is lightly different but you may have to loosen the right side of the dash to remove the heater duct. In addition, the air conditioning Freon might possibly have to be drained and recharged and the air conditioning evaporator removed.
Question: 1993 Chevy Bonanza mileage: 103,800. My air conditioner needs to be re-charged. It has the old type Freon so it needs to have the new type put in. Problem is my local garage said the manufacturer recommends not doing this. But their computer tech manual gave no reason why. Why does GM recommend not doing this? If I have it done, will it cause problems with the AC unit? If I can't have the new style Freon put in where would I find the old type (I don't think it's made anymore)?
Answer: Your vehicle can be changed over to the new type of Refrigerant (134a). However, you must remove as much of the old compressor oil as possible first and replace it with the new type compressor oil before adding the new Freon. Compression failure could result if this procedure is not followed.
