Chevy Beretta Repair Questions
Question: 1995 Chevy Beretta mileage: 120,000. Ok...I give up. I have a degree in Criminal Justice...not auto mechanics. My Beretta had been having some issues with the ignition. Might have to try it 3-4-5 times before it would "catch" and start. I thought it may be the solenoid...so I replaced the starter and solenoid unit...it was under warranty. Then it wouldn't do anything...period. Nothing, no lights, dome light, buzzer on the ignition...nothing. So I asked around and was told it may be the ignition starter switch...the one you have to drop down the steering column to get too. Took it to parts store and they tested it with a volt meter and said it was bad...I thought great, finally a reprieve. I replaced it and now...it turns over like it wants to start...its getting gas...I can smell it...but absolutely no spark. I took the plug wires off and grounded them to the block with a screwdriver and no arc whatsoever. Please bring an end to this madness and frustration.
Answer: First check for a blown fuse in the fuse box, paying particular attention to the fuse for the ECM (electronic control module). If this checks out okay, scan the computer for fault codes as you may have a faulty crank and/or cam sensor.
Question: 1989 Chevrolet Beretta mileage: 280,000. I would like to know the wiring diagram for the digital dash, I have tried so many repair manuals but they wont give me enough information, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: As a general rule, wiring diagrams are not available for the digital dash which is a self-contained unit. When a digital dash is faulty, the whole thing needs to be replaced.
Question: 1996 Chevy Beretta mileage: 66,000. Ok I am not getting power to my Fuel pump when I turn on the key; the Fuel pump is good. If I put a hot wire to the test lead the pump runs but the car will not idle. So, I was told new Fuel filter, Fuel relay switch, oil pressure switch and Fuel pump and screen. I have put all of these in and yet still, the car will not run. Please tell me what is wrong with my car. John
Answer: You need to scan the computer for a faulty sensor. A good place to start is by checking our
first things to check page.
Question: 1995 Chevy Beretta mileage: 88,000. I need to rebuild the brake master cylinder. The car has anti lock brakes and the Haynes manual says I need to take the car to a service center to bleed the brakes since special tools are required. I was wondering what these special tools are. I have access to an air-operated bleeder if that is what is required. Please help on this. I am capable of the rebuild but want to make sure that I will be able to bleed the brakes after the job is done.
Answer: An air operated power brake bleeder is the proper tool used to bleed the brake system in your car. When rebuilding the master cylinder and before reinstalling on the car, bench-bleed the master cylinder to remove as much air as possible. This will make bleeding the system later a lot easier.
Question: 1996 Chevrolet Beretta mileage: 62,000. Car is failing to start. It started a couple of minutes before, and it started fine. I went to start it again and it didn't start. It was turning so it wasn't a starter problem. It sounds like it's firing, but just barely, and not enough for it to run. We checked for spark there was spark. We checked airflow, I'm getting that. We changed the fuel filter because gas wasn't squirting out of the Schrader valve when opened, it was just kinda dribbling. Now none comes out at all. The flow arrow is facing the right direction. We were told check for fuel pump starting whine. We didn't hear any. So it may be the relay switch or the fuel pump its self. Do fuel pumps just go or do they
kind of go bad over time? I was driving around all day with no problems. I figured it might just be the relay because it just "died.” I do not on the other hand know where either of the location for my relay or my fuel pump. Help I need help please!
Answer: Sounds like you have a faulty fuel pump which is located in the gasoline tank.

Question: 1994 Chevy Beretta mileage: 127,000. I have taken my Beretta to three different mechanics to have this problem solved and have yet to get it lined out. It has extreme hesitation on the throttle, and when the car slows from normal driving speed to a stop it dies. The idle does run rough whereas before this problem occurred it purred like a kitten. I've replaced the computer, map sensor, throttle position sensor, starter relay, and according to the Chevy Dealer they are not getting any new readouts of problems. I'm running out of options on this problem. I'm hoping you may have an idea of what to do.
Answer: Check the EGR valve to make sure it is closed at idle. Inspect the engine for vacuum leaks and check the exhaust system and catalytic converter to see that they are not plugged.
Question: 1996 Chevrolet Beretta mileage: 50,000. I need help finding the six plugs. I replaced the three on the front. I have never dealt with this car before. It is my daughter's.
Answer: There are three spark plugs on the back of the engine. It is tight so change them with the engine cold.
Question: 1999 Chevy Beretta mileage: 106,500. Yesterday I was driving my Beretta down the road when the car stuttered and died on me. I cranked over engine many times and found engine only to run when floored. Engine at floored speed sounded very weird. I brought the car home and took off exhaust thinking it was the catalectic converter was clogging engine. After removing engine exhaust engine started and ran for about 20 seconds before it puttered and stopped once again. Now engine cranks but will not start. I believe I do have fuel and compression, but no spark from wires. My question is, what is causing this and how can I fix it?
Answer: Your car is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system. An independent auto service center can scan your computer for fault or error codes. The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components.
Question: 1998 Chevy Beretta mileage: 95,000. My car is in very good condition; however, it has developed a rough idle upon coming to a complete stop. The tachometer oscillates between 200 Rpms to approximately 1300 Rpms. If I don't even off the idle by giving it a little gas, the engine stalls. How and where do I adjust the idle? Thank you in advance for your help.
Answer: The idle speed is controlled by the computer. Your car may be ready for a major tune-up including spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter and air filter. Also, perform a fuel pump pressure test. Clean fuel injection system including throttle bore, idle speed control motor and passages. If problem still exists, scan computer for trouble codes.
