Cadillac CTS Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 2004 Cadillac CTS 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 51,256 miles My instrument cluster was smashed through a breakin. I need to replace the entire cluster. My Question is; does the on board computer remember the current mileage and will it register it when the new odometer is installed.

Answer: no it has to be programmed, the IP controls everything

Question: 2004 Cadillac CTS 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 35000 miles The plastic undercarriage protector on the underside of my car in the motor area ripped off. What do you call the large plastic undercarriage protector and any idea what it would cost.

Answer:
its under warrenty

Question:
2000 Cadillac CTS Engine Size unknown Two Wheel Drive Automatic 170000 miles A friend's car is in my driveway with a dead battery and will not take a charge with my battery charger (must have less than 1 V charge according to the charger instructions or is just plain dead). I was going to try to use my jumper cables but I am not sure where the negative is. I only see the positive cable and the battery has a fuse and relay system on top. Reluctant to cause more damage I backed off and left the car. In this case would I go to a ground on the car and the positive terminal?

Answer:
do you see the battery under the hood? I think the battery is under the rear seat. the positive thing you see under the hood is probably the jump start terminal. get back to me.

Question (follow up):
You were exactly right - the battery was under the back seat. I would never have looked there. THANK YOU!

Question:
2003 Cadillac CTS 69000 miles I have a check engine light which came back saying my thermostat needs to be replaced. I've been told it is a labor intensive job and may take anywhere from 1.5 to 5 hours to complete. The part itself is maybe $20 but the labor to replace the part is astounding. What has to happen in order to replace the thermostat? Is this something I could do at home or am I better off having it done in a shop?

Answer:
You have to access the timing belt. and remove it, and you need special tools to set it back up, at 69k you should do a belt if you haven't done one

Question:
2005 Cadillac CTS 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 43,000 miles My car died three different times. Each time it was the same problem; the gearshift gets stuck in park, the lights, radio, heater etc. work, but I can't get the car out of park. The first time, they told me nothing was wrong because it started up again at the dealership. The second time they told me it was the battery and "overhauled" the battery. The third time they said it was the battery again and replaced the battery. Do you think it is the transmission? Should I ask for or demand a new transmission or transmission overhaul?

Answer:
No, the shift lock engages when it has no power, if the battery is still dead you still have problems, take it back and get a rental car and tell them to fix it.

Question: 2003 Cadillac CTS 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 69,000 miles I have a Cadillac cts and I was just wondering how much it would cost to replace the head gasket, and is it normal for it to go out at 69,000 mi?

Answer: What is the problem, oil in the coolant? replace the oil cooler, its between the heads, remove the intake, its under it.

Question:
I have a 2004 Cadillac CTS that wont go into gear. I tried to start it and it wouldn't start, so I looked under the hood and noticed it was a bad connection to the battery. So I wiggled the cables and it powered back up...but then it locked my doors with my keys in it. I was able to get a hanger through there and unlocked it and started it and tried to put it into gear, and it wont go, and my keys wont come out of the ignition and the dash has a lock light on it, and it says the security system needs service....what do I do? Any suggestions?

Answer:
Its under warranty have it towed to the dealer. once a wrong key is recognized it does this

Question: 2003 Cadillac CTS Engine Size unknown Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 159608 miles Can having your thermostat replace cause the oil value cover gasket to go bad and began to leak?
I have a situation where I had my thermostat replaced on a 2003 CTS Cadillac the other day oil began pouring out of my engine onto the manifold. The car was taken back to the dealership they denied doing anything to cause the problem and told me I needed valve cover gasket. I explained that six months ago valve cover gasket, oxygen sensor, throttle body gasket, intake manifold gasket, plenum gasket, camshaft cover seal, valve cover bolt, intake manifold bolt were replaced with all new GM parts. Can this just break down again or did the people who replaced the thermostat do something to cause the problem?

Answer: I haven't heard of a thermostat replacement causing a valve cover gasket to leak...Possibly the blame lies in the gasket replacement the first time around...
