Cadillac Catera Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1998 Cadillac Catera Engine Size unknown Wheel Drive Type
unknown Automatic 86000 miles I have to put antifreeze in my car like every 2
months and I don't see it leaking out of my car anywhere....but you can smell it
burning.....what could be the problem?
Answer: your heater control valve, its behind the intake, close to the firewall, usually
when this leaks it leaks alot, it drips on the trans. other places is the oil
cooler gasket leaks 2 ways, oil in the coolant (bad oil cooler), or leaks down
the back on to the tranny like the heater control valve, since it is small leak
I would ck the gasket to the oil cooler, this is under the intake( the bottom
one) remove the plentum (top Intake) to see the bottom intake. if your going to
take it off do not over tighten the bottom intake its plastic you will crack it
Question: 1998 Cadillac Catera 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 140000 miles I am
trying to locate the I/P brace bolt to attempt to get the heater core out. also
I was told that I might have to take the dash completely out to get to the
heater core. what do I really need to do?
Answer:
this calls for removal of dash panel assembly and
steering column. it shows 5.4 hours labor to do the job. i have never done
one before, maybe someone else knows a short cut. good luck

Drive Automatic 999999 miles. I cannot understand how to remove the intake
manifold. I removed 4 bolts on the top but it does not budge

Question: 1999 Cadillac Catera 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 120000 miles We are replacing the head gaskets on our '99 Catera. What is the importance of replacing the serpentine and timing belt tentioners within the same process?
Answer: It's a crapshoot. Maybe they are fine today and next week they aren't. The more critical one is the timing belt one as it is more labor intensive to go back into. The serpentine belt tensioner is more accessible and will give some warning signs of going bad.
If it was mine I would do the timing belt tensioner cause I'm there, serp. tensoner...if it is moving free and was not cocked when mounted, I'd re-use it.
Question: 1997 Cadillac Catera 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 77000 miles The driver side heater blows cold air but the passenger side works fine. A noise is heard behind the radio console when the car is shut off. It's 15 here I need heat.
Answer: Is there a coolant leak? if not ck the heater control valve it behind the the intake by the firewall. ck the vaccume tube to it if its not broken replace the valve. if the valve is leaking coolant will be all over the
transmittion, its orange in color
Question:
2001 Cadillac Catera 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 73565 miles I need to know when I should change the brake pads on my 2001 Cadillac catera. I have all receipts to the car and none of which say a brake job was done. I bought the car less than a year ago. I can't really tell.

indicator light when pads need to be done( brake pad sensors )
Question: 1998 Cadillac Catera 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 107358 miles We are working on a 1998 Catera that we removed the heads on to replace leaking head gaskets. When we put it back together we had amechanic come out from Cadillac to set up the timing belt. At that time he checked the cam gears and made sure that the cams were in the right location. The intake cams were coded with a "G" and the exhaust cams were coded with an "A." The cam gears were properly installed with the timing marks used at 1,2,3 and 4 from passenger side to drivers side while looking towards engine from harmonic balancer. The engine lacks power, backfires through the intake, sets codes P0302, P0304, and P0306 all at the same time. One time it even set a code P0336 which is a crank sensor code. We have checked the spark on cylinders 2, 4 and 6. Spark seems fine. We have removed the plugs and 1,3 and 5 are firing fine. Plugs 2, 4 and 6 seem to be wet. We have checked all the connections and found them to be OK. We are missing something and we cannot figure it out. We also had the man back from Cadillac and he is also stumped. Please help
Answer: Do a full compression test to compare the odd # side of the engine to the even # side. All your misses are on one side of the engine. Sounds like low compression/valve timing issues.
Question: 1997 Cadillac Catera 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 146000 miles
Transmission will go in reverses and first will not change out. Can this be something besides the
transmission itself?
Answer:
shift solenoids, or the connection to
the solenoids could be corroded.
