MORE: Cadillac Brougham Repair Question

Question: 1990 Cadillac Brougham V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 90,000 miles. I recently acquired a 1990 Cadillac Brougham, however the previous owner lost the keys. I would like to know how to change out the ignition switch.

Answer:  Contact your local Cadillac dealership to order a new key.

Question: 1992 Cadillac Brougham V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 125,000 miles. I need to buy a new radiator and two different ones are available--with engine an oil cooler or without. How do I tell which one I have/need? (Vin #?) It's Rear wheel drive with A/C, belt driven fan & water pump, 5.7 liter, Does NOT say Fleetwood anywhere on car --only Brougham.

Answer: If its rear wheel drive it is a Fleetwood / Brougham.

Question: 1987 Cadillac Brougham V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 118,00 miles. The engine drags after installing new timing chain. I took the chain back off and motors spins freely. Now the chain is back on and it drags like timing is off but no matter which way I turn distributor it stays the same. What have I done wrong or is there something else wrong? I never removed distributor.

Answer:  To change timing you have to put it in limp mode, timing is set in computer so it stays, may have the distributor off a tooth check that also, put a jumper wire in the diag terminal to get check engine light on ( limp mode).

Question: 1990 Cadillac Brougham V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 214,000 miles. How to remove the power steering pump?

Answer: Have to have a pulley puller, loosen motor mounts one in front and one in rear, jack motor up somewhat, to get at pulley with puller.

Question:
I have a 1992 Cadillac Brougham 5.7 liter engine with a R-12 refrigerant ac system, 53,000 miles. The system is fully charged but at idle the compressor will disengage and not start again unless, A) I high rev the engine. B) Tap on the canister molded onto the high pressure hose where the connection for the manifold gauge hose would attach. Am I dealing with a contaminated system? Any advice appreciated.

Answer: Sounds like a pressure switch problem. Test for power in and out of the low pressure cycling switch. Sometimes they get weak and wont hold the comp on.

Question: 1991 Cadillac Brougham. The fan runs at constant speed, will not turn off with car. Must unplug fan to make it stop running. Climate control system does not make any difference what it is set at. ie Auto Hi Auto Low, Auto all the same. What could be the problem?

Answer: Either the ECC (Electronic Climate Control Unit) or the Blower Control Unit. I would start with the Blower Control Unit, It is basically the old fan speed resistor.

Question: 1985 Cadillac Fleetwood Brough 4.1L mileage: 70,000.  Not really, a repair question but advice.  I am considering purchasing the above vehicle from an older gentleman who has lost his license.  It is a real cream puff with all the dealer maintenance records since it was new, including the major repair of the intake manifold gasket and the damage to the camshaft that I understand was a major flaw on the motor.  Should I have any concerns about the vehicle?  I talked to several Cadillac mechanics and they told me that once that repair has been made the vehicle is a good buy at 2000 dollars.

Answer:  Sounds like you may have found a good used car.
