Audi Repair Questions and Answers

Question:  2001
A4 Quattro V6 30V mileage: 100,000.  I am hearing a kind of humming noise coming from the back of the car sometimes.  After a while it gets really bad and the car starts to slow way down and you have to push the gas pedal all the way to the floor and the car stumbles for a while and then it starts running all right.  It seems like the fuel filter might be plugged up and if that is right, could you tell me where it is at.

Answer:  Your stalling problem may be cause by the fuel pump.  Replacing it and the fuel filter should fix your problem.  The fuel filter should be located in the back by the gas tank.

Question:  2000 A6 Quattro V8 4.2L mileage: 90,000. My car will be driving normally then a sudden increase in temperature occurs then overheating. I wonder whether the thermostat is stuck in the closed position. I have just started to use the heat. That’s working ok.

Answer: From what you describe, one of three things are at fault. 1. A stuck thermostat, 2. A radiator cooling fan not operating properly, 3. A partially plugged radiator.

Question:
1999 Audi A4 2.3L mileage: 143,900  It doesn't have an owner's manual and everything is in German. After I got it home and it sat for a day, I it started it and the battery light and engine temperature light stays on after ignition. The strange thing is the two lights get brighter only when I'm accelerating. When I shift gears the lights would fade until I put my foot back onto the gas pedal. I've checked the battery, it's almost like new, and the engine doesn't seem to be overheating. I thought it may be the alternator, but even that looks good. Someone who also owns an Audi suggested that it may be the relay, but for the life of me, I can't find where the relays are. I would take it to a repair shop but here in Prague they charge you an arm and leg just to look at the vehicle, let alone fix it, besides, it's a standard and I need both arms and legs to drive it. Can you guys point me some sort of direction of what to look for or what to ask for.

Answer: First, we would test the alternator and make sure that it is putting out 14 to 14 volts. If the voltage output is okay, we would still suspect the alternator because a diode that is failing will cause the battery light to come on even though the charging is okay.

Question:  1998 Audi A6 mileage: 99,000.  When I start the car in the morning or afternoon after work, the engine idles very rough for a few seconds before going to normal.  Sometimes the RPM will fluctuate from very high to very low after starting.  Sometimes when switching gears (5 speed manual) the RPM remains high and doesn't drop when easing off the gas.  After driving for a length of time (about 45 minutes) and I stop for about 5 minutes the car will not start until after about 30 minutes, and will continue to run erratic.  I took it to the Audi deal here in Saudi Arabia and they said they replaced the air filter, regulator (part no.  VW034 133 482) and adjusted output idling, but after about a week it was back doing the same thing.  I would appreciate any advice as to what might be the problem.

Answer:  Scan the computer for fault codes.  Also, replace the oxygen and coolant sensors.

Question:  1997 Audi A6 mileage: 122,000.  Lately the heater fan has been making odd sounds at regular and low fan speed.  High speed is ok.  Tonight, I turned the car off to run in to the coffee shop.  (Note: the heater fan was making that loud noise.)  When I started the car up, I had no headlights, signal lights, and the climate control.  (No heat) also no seat warmer.  The car ran ok.   Parking lights and instrument panel are fine.   I checked the fuses and alls well.  What could be the problem?

Answer:    We are guessing that the fan motor shorted out causing a fuseable link to fail.

Question:  1996 Audi A4 mileage: 125,000  My car has a cold start problem will not idle until started at least 3 times & will not idle below 1200 rpms after warm. What could cause this? It is fuel injected not carbureted.

Answer: Your car may be ready for a major tune-up including spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter and air filter. Also, perform a fuel pump pressure test. Clean fuel injection system including throttle bore, idle speed control motor and passages. If problem still exists, scan computer for trouble codes.

Question:  1998 Audi A4 mileage: 132,000. I just replaced the external fuel filter and ever since only when it is cold it has a hard time staying running until it warms up after 10-15 minutes. Once it is warmed up, it runs great. Someone mentioned a cold enrichment valve. I am not sure what that is.

Answer: The cold enrichment valve is only active during cranking when the engine is cold. Check electrical connector in the engine compartment. One may have been "bumped" while the fuel filter was changed. Pay extra attention to the temperature sensors.

Question:  I have a 1999 Audi A4. Maintenance is included and calls for an oil change every 7500 miles. Doesn't that seem like to long to go for an oil change? If I wanted to change it more frequently, I need a special wrench to take the oil plug off. Do you know what kind or size of wrench it requires?

Answer:  7,500 miles seems a little too long. We recommend 3,000 to 4,000 mile intervals. If a special wrench is required, you should be able to purchase it from your Audi dealer.
