Acura RL Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 2002 Acura RL 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 125,000 miles. I have a few questions.. 1- I hear a clicking noise, sometimes when I am turning? 2- I just changed the brakes and pads for the entire car and I hear a screeching noise somewhere in the back. 3- I also have a problem with rubbing when I drive over bumps. if it helps any.. the car is well maintained. I just changed all brakes with drilled slotted rotors and ceramic pads...I also just got brand new wheels and tires size 255/40-18, the car came with 225/55-16 .the rubbing problem was happening even before I upgraded the wheels. it was also hit on the drivers side fender.. it was a hit and run while it was parked.. I am also in the process of changing the shocks... other than that any other recommendations to solve my problems

Answer: by any chance, did you lubricate the brake pad edges (ears) before putting it on the bracket? clicking noise could be from the brake pads shifting up or down on the bracket. drive the car forward and reverse for a few feet a couple of times, check if you can hear the same noise. screeching noise could be from a dust shield making contact with the rotor. Just push the metal plate back, away from the rotor and see if it helps.
as far as the rubbing goes, I guess you could just take a look at the fender well lining and make sure its in place. Other than that, you may have bent parts or could use an alignment. How does the tire wear? it should give you a good idea on the rubbing

Question: 1996 Acura RL 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 155,000 miles. The car cranks when starting but not turn over. We replaced battery & alternator. The security red light does flash intermittently, could that be it?

Answer: The car is equipped with an immobilizer system to prevent theft. you should see the key shaped, green indicator in the dashboard on top of the shift selector the light should blink twice then turn off; if you have a programmed key. If it keeps blinking, then you have to get your key programmed by the dealer. Red security light is not from the factory. Sometimes you can disable aftermarket alarms by locking then unlocking the car with the key from the driver's door.

Question: 1997 Acura RL 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 109,000 miles I cannot find my blown fuse for the cigarette lighter it does not work anymore after I plugged in a portable air pump to air up my tire and then it cut off and now I don't have power in the cigarette lighter but it lights up around it but no power I need to plug my radar detector back in can u help me?

Answer:  if it happens frequently, you can to get an updated accessory socket installed from the dealer, part no. P/N 39624-SZ3-L01 or you can keep replacing fuse #4 from the fuse box located at the driver's left foot area.

Question: 1999 Acura RL 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 180,000 miles how do I get pull out the piece needed to replace hid bulb

Answer: you need a screwdriver or bit with a torx end; T-20 I believe. remove the screw from the cover and twist the cover counter-clockwise. twist the bulb's socket, counter clockwise as well. you will see the fastener that holds the bulb. push the fastener in, bring to the side and release. replace the bulb. do not touch any part of the bulb's glass ,the bulb is fastened in one position only AND make sure the car is completely off before you start;30,000 volts is a lot of current.

Question:2000 Acura RL 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 137,852 miles my car went about three feet and shut off. I replaced the fuel pump and still nothing. what else do I need to check. when I spray starting fluid the vehicle starts. please help

Answer: You will have to get the fuel pump electrics checked, can you hear the pump cycle, (run for a few seconds when the ignition is turned on) you may have a faulty relay or a fuse has blown.

Question: 2002 Acura RL 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 50,000 miles. location and replacement of the pcv valve

Answer: Follow the lines from the throttle body area to the valve covers.

Question: 1997 Acura RL V6 Front Wheel Drive Automatic 145,000 miles. I'm pretty good with cars - even built my own code reader for OBD-I (95 Mercedes), but this has me stumped. I can't get "Maintenance Required" light on dash to turn off. I've read codes with Actron - no codes stored. I've cleared codes even though none stored. Tried typical GM tricks - key on, gas pedal to floor 3 times. Still can't get light to turn off. Any advice?

Answer: Try holding the reset to the trip odometer and while holding it turn on the key to the run position. The vehicle does not need to start. Keep holding the button until the light goes out or actually should turn green I think.

Question: 1997 Acura RL 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 142000 miles. 1 after an accident and the right rear pass door was changed the dome light remains on. did not see a door pin that usually control the dome light. before I took the car to the body shop dome light worked fine. 2 radio displays code. even after I enter the code radio will not play. before I took the car to the body shop the radio played fine.

Answer: Check to see if they left of the door switch or if it is out of adjustment. BUT It sounds as though you are having residual effects of the accident. The smartest thing to do is contact the insurance company and report these problems. Many companies will stand behind the slow to surface problems for a couple of months. The impact of the accident can raise havoc with a number of auto parts not in direct contact with the collision.

Question: 96 Acura RL exterior door handle remove and replace??????????

Answer: Pull the door apart from the inside. Take off the inside panel. Have the window up. You need to unhook the rods and then get inside with a small wrench to take off the couple of nut or screws. Once you get inside you will get a feel for it. The sad but good thing is that once you have done it you now understand how to do it. Lesson learned and then forgotten as you are probably now good at it.

Question:  1997 Acura 3.5 RL  mileage: 143,000. I just changed my tires and have to get both my front upper right and left control arms changed.  Should I wait till this is done to get a wheel alignment or can I do the alignment before the control arms are changed?

Answer:   Sometimes replacement parts change the alignment slightly.  All of the front end components should be replaced first and then have the wheels aligned.

Question: 1995 Acura  mileage: 150,000. I had the transmission rebuilt by a reputable dealer. After one week the service engine code light came on and the transmission jerked very roughly when put into gear. They diagnosed that a circuit that went through the ignition switch was the culprit. They changed out the switch. That solution lasted about 3 weeks before the code came back and the transmission bucked. They took the car, dove it for about two hundred miles but the problem did not reoccur for them. But it happened again yesterday. They removed the code, the same code that told them the ignition switch might be the problem, and the car runs fine. This problem occurs only when starting the car, never when in operation. Any suggestions?

Answer: Check for loose or missing ground wires to the engine/transmission assembly. Also, look for bad connections in the main power wires and in the main power distribution panel.

Question: 1996 3.5 Acura  3.5v6 mileage: 83,000. Re: Check Engine Light - Dealer stated computer indicated a blocked line to the EGR valve. Inspection revealed no blockage and dealer stated it has to be blocked or has carbon build-up in intake manifold and would require cleaning and replacing all the intake manifold gaskets. Instead, dealer reset computer and added fuel line cleaner. Check engine light came back on after two weeks. Should I let the dealer perform the cleaning of the intake manifold or is there anything I can do to clean the carbon such as gas additives etc?

Answer: If carbon is building up in the intake manifold and is blocking the EGR valve, the only way we know to clean this is by removing the manifold and mechanically scraping the carbon out. We know of no gasoline additives that will cure your problem for you.
