Acura Legend Repair Questions and Answers
Question: 1993
Acura Legend mileage:103,156 I think its engine is v6 and only when I'm stopped
at traffic is when it starts to over-heat, I was thinking that it could be the fan?
Answer:
Check the thermostat, take it out run
the engine without it, now go and duplicate the problem. If it is still overheating,
the radiator could be partially plugged. Try flushing it first and if that doesn't
work a new radiator may be needed. With that many miles, a water pump would be a
good idea too.
Question: 1991 Acura Legend mileage:
135,000. I recently had a water pump and a radiator installed. The temperature
gauge is dropping down into the cold area. I have heard of the temperature
gauge rising but never dropping. What would be the problem?
Answer: With a new radiator, there is a good chance your car will
run cooler, especially if the old radiator was plugged. If it running colder
than normal, the thermostat may need to be replaced.
Question: 1993 Acura Legend initial
symptom was intermittent blower control on all low speeds and always work on
max. Max speed failed and over the phone, the Acura dealer stated a bypass
transistor was the problem. Acura dealer installed bypass transistor with
no positive results. He then stated the blower motor was at fault.
Dealer replaced motor; again with no positive results. He kept my car for
another couple of hours and stated it was the blower motor/temp control unit in
the dash and it cost about $1600. I personally replaced the control unit
from a salvaged auto with the same results. You can hear the relays click
but no blower motor working. I removed the blower motor from the car
and connected it directly to the battery and it appeared to work. I
reversed the leads and connected them again like original and the motor blew
extremely hard. I disconnected and connected the leads to the battery
several times but could not duplicate the extremely strong air movement but it
would always blow when connected. What is my faulty component/components?
Any help/advice would be appreciated. The car is in great shape except for
that. I would hate hardwire the blower motor but it is starting to get hot
in Texas.
Answer: In view of the amount
of parts that you have replaced, what comes to mind that you did not mention
would be the control switch on the dash.
Question: 1992 Acura Legend
mileage: 105,000. This has been going on for more than a year, and I do
all my own mechanical work so I don't have a regular garage mechanic to ask
about it. Often when I depress the brake pedal at 45 mph or faster it pushes
back in the pulsating fashion that indicates the antilock braking system is
engaged. The ABS warning light doesn't come on at any time. And
there's no problem with the braking. But clearly, something's not right.
What's up?
Answer: Check the brake
rotors to see if they are warped. This would explain the pulsating that
you are experiencing.
Addendum: Thanks, but I've been through
difficulties with warped rotors before. That was more a shimmy and shake
in the front end when I braked at high speed. In this case the brake pedal
pushes back at me, pulsating, exactly/precisely the same as it does on ice or
wet leaves when I put the ABS through its paces.
Answer: Check the wheel
sensors for the ABS; one is more than likely damaged or not functioning which
causes your ABS to think one wheel is going slower than the other is.
This would cause the pulsing you described.
Question: 1991 Acura Legend L
3.2 V6 mileage: 95,000. For approx. 8,000 miles a 'rattling' noise occurs
at 1,500 rpm - sounds like engine is a diesel. Obvious when car is decelerating
or held steady at 1500, it runs fine otherwise - gets 24 mpg highway 70-75 mph.
The dealer originally said it was carbon buildup and it needed GM Top Engine Cleaner.
After they did treatment, car started better but noise is still there - seems to
be a little louder. Dealer now says it could be rings but also says 'not to
worry about it - it should be good for 200,000 miles'. Any ideas on how to
come up with a better diagnosis would be appreciated!
Answer: We would check
for a broken piston or wrist pin.
Question: 1997 Acura mileage:
140,000. How do I know if my alternator is going bad? Also, how do I
distinguish the difference between the alternator as opposed to the battery being
bad?
Answer: A load test will tell you the condition of the battery.
The output of the alternator should be approximately 14 volts and 40 amps at 1500
Rpm.
Question: 1991 Acura
Legend Coupe V6 mileage: 135,000. My daughter's car oil checks full but her car's
oil light comes on and blinks.... could this indicate a oil pump problem or what?
Answer: Yes. You may be having oil pump problems. The pump relief valve
might be stuck open. Several other possibilities are a faulty oil pressure-sending
unit or the engine main and rod bearing are worn allowing the oil pressure to escape.
Question: 1990 Acura Legend mileage: 126,000. I've recently been
told my Acura has a "seeping head gasket." Is this something I should have fixed
quickly or will it be ok for a while? Any estimates on repair? I live in Connecticut.
Answer: It may be okay for a while if it is just seeping. Check coolant
and oil levels often. You may want to consider an engine overhaul with 126,000 miles.
Head gasket replacement would cost will vary
Question: 1998 Acura Legend mileage:
155,000. My car's speedometer has been acting strangely lately. The needle would
vibrate, as I get moving. The faster I go the faster the needle would vibrate. Around
60 miles per hour it would bounce back and forth around one dash. The funny thing
is that it only happens sometimes. This is driving me crazy. Your help would be
greatly appreciated.
Answer: The speedometer is driven by a cable
that connects to the transmission. The cable should be replaced. You can try cleaning
and re-lubing the cable, that sometimes works.
