Acura Legend Repair Questions and Answers

Question: Steering problem 1989 Acura Legend 6 cyl Automatic 314,715 miles. when I turn my steering wheel it makes a really loud annoying clicking noise. I'm not really sure what it is. I was told it could a cv joint or axle. but I really don't know. could u help me out??

Answer:   If this clicking noise is while turning as you are driving I would be having the C.V's inspected. This is a common problem with FWD cars.

Question: 1988 Acura Legend 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 125,000 miles. my brakes aren't making noise but the brake light is not on indicating needing new brakes

Answer: The "brake light" just indicates when the brake fluid its low, check the brake pads (front and rear) they could be worn.

Question: 1993 Acura Legend 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 182,000 miles, The temp gauge goes up at 70+ mph and also in stop and go traffic. The overflow container fills with coolant front the radiator. The heat does not work until the temp gauge falls back to normal. Can you help me? I replaced the thermostat and radiator cap but still does the same thing.

Answer:  Remove the actual radiator cap and check coolant level there. sounds like low on coolant. let us know how it is.

Question: 1992 Acura Legend Engine Size unknown Two wheel drive Automatic 240,000 miles. I have a problem getting heat from the car. It seems to produce heat when RPM is over 2000 but doesn't blow any heat on start up

Answer: Check your coolant level.

Question: I have a 1991 Acura Legend, Which I bought four years ago and the previous owner, I guess he was racing the car because it was dropped a few inches. Know the rear wheels are going bad, every 2 months I have to change the back wheel because the thread keeps finishing quick and when I look at the back wheels from a distance you can see they are side ways, what can I do about this or what I can buy to help the rear wheels. thank you

Answer: you need to get an alignment. if it was lowered, chances are that your camber adjustment is off and you need to install a camber kit before the alignment is done cause your car has a fixed camber which has no adjustment.

Question: 1989 Acura Legend 6 cyl Two wheel drive Automatic 300k miles. what does the light mean and what should I do to find out why it is on

Answer: it stands for programmable fuel injection, precursor to check engine light. your vehicle is OBDI which makes it difficult for most current technicians to diagnose because your vehicle cannot be simply scanned. you need to go to a shop or dealer that is familiar with with your car and obd1. call before you go.

Question: 1990 Acura Legend 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 220,000 miles Which diagnostic scanner do I need for my car and where is the connection? I know the ECU is located under the passenger seat but are unable to find out which OBD is needed. Thanks so much for any help you can give me on this..

Answer: Yours is an OBD1 system-get a repair manual it should be in there how to extract the code/s could be using a jumper wire or the key method.

Question: 1994 Acura Legend 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 157,000 miles. My heater do not working and air conditioner too and it doesn't blowing. I'm already check the cooling system and didn't find any leaking. Other people told me maybe this is electrical problem. Please any one help me.

Answer: Yes it sure is electrical. might be fuse, blower, transistor or harness.

Question: 1991 Acura Legend V6 Front Wheel Drive Automatic 149,000 miles. I am noticing a chain like sound in or under the engine. It sounds like its around the front right tire but it sounds like it travels to the RR as well. Like a bike chain that's off before realigning its teeth, or between gears. There is a noticeable space and power disassociation shifting between gears 1 and 2 and it seems to almost blow through 3 but I am able to accelerate and decelerate normally except for the kick/lack between 1 and 2. Also I am noticing thicker exhaust. It isn't dark or white and I'm not burning or leaking any oil. The anti lock break light turns on after 2 minutes, and the anti lock breaks work.

Answer: Are the CV axles in good shape? Check the fluids for color and thus contamination possibly from another system. i.e.. oil in coolant, coolant in oil. If you know the ABS is working are the lights all working on the exterior? Chances are the brakes work but not the ABS. I would check the wheel sensors first.

Question: 1997 Acura Legend  mileage: 157,000. Hello, My problem is my air conditioning. If the AC button is on or off, the air will come on, not cycle, and freeze up the system. Sometimes I will sit and listen, and push the button on or off, and it will turn the compressor on and off. But then I will leave the button off, and in a few minutes, it will come on, stay on, and freeze up. I thought it was a clutch problem, so I disconnected the power to the compressor, and it stays off. But next summer I'm going to want to use it again. Is there a relay or anything that might be bad? On Honda products, the fan switch will also shut off the AC in the off position, but my AC will still keep running. I do not have auto climate control...just the regular style. I had the system recharged and checked for pressure, and that is fine.

Answer: You may have a bad dash control switch for the air-conditioner or a relay that is not functioning properly.

Question: 1996 Acura Legend V6 mileage: 95,000. This is a car I am looking to buy. It is in excellent condition, just inspected, passed emissions, no engine or transmission noises. But, a PGM-FI light comes on after a couple of minutes. There seems to be no engine performance changes before or after the light comes on. Any ideas on what it means or how to check what is causing it?

Answer: The PGM-FI light is another word for "check engine light." The "check engine" light will "light" when there is a malfunction in the engine management system. The fault code is then stored in the computer. The computer must be scanned with a OBD-II scanner to retrieve these stored faults to pinpoint the malfunctioning component. Because the check engine light indicates something is wrong, sooner rather than later is recommended. We recommend buying your own scanner.

Question:  1997 Acura Legend mileage: 122,000.  problem: engine runs very rough for about 5 minutes after start-up, then all of a sudden runs fine. Doesn't matter if I've driven 2 miles or 200, if I shut it off and restart it, it still runs terrible for the first 5 minutes.  I've changed the fuel filter twice, and the plugs are good.  I had a mechanic check it with a diagnostic unit, and he found no codes showing.  Any ideas?

Answer:  The "check engine" light will "light" when there is a malfunction in the engine management system. The fault code is then stored in the computer. The computer must be scanned to retrieve these stored faults to pinpoint the malfunctioning component. We recommend buying your own scanner and doing it yourself. With a pocket scanner you can check for fault codes to find out why the light came on in the first place. You can clear your cars trouble codes after you make the needed repairs.

Question:  2000 Acura Legend  mileage: 79,500.  This isn't a repair question as much as it is an advice question.  One of my headlights burned out today and I was looking into new bulbs.  I couldn't help but notice the clarity and brightness of my friend's TL with xenon bulbs, but apparently, the Acura xenon kit is astronomically expensive.  I looked for less expensive alternatives and was wondering if bulbs such as Sylvania's "Cool Blue" and Phillips "blue vision" were a marketing scam or if they really did provide similar clarity to the xenon headlights.  I know they aren't up to par with a several hundred dollar headlight unit, but how good are they really?

Answer:  Light bulbs over time get weak and thus dimmer.  Therefore, when you replace one, it is wise to replace both.  All manufacturers must meet government specifications.

Question:  1998 Acura Legend 2.0 mileage: 134,000.  I just replaced my thermostat. The screw/bolt broke off in the housing.  How do you recommend removing the old screw/bolt?  Drill out?  Torch it?

Answer:   Carefully drill a small hole in the broken bolt and use an “easy out” to remove the bolt.

Question:  1990 Acura v6 mileage: 120,000.  Strange vibration. 5 spd trans, in 3rd gear accelerating hard from 35 mph to 60 mph, engine oscillates and brings steering wheel and gearshift vibration to extreme.  Can be felt in other gears.  I have balanced tires, cut rotors, replaced front center motor mount, and reduced vibration by 50%.  It seems root cause of vibration still exists.  On rack with brakes applied and torque applied to drive line engine seems to set up an oscillation when brakes and engine speed simulate road condition noted above.  Found right upper motor mount body securing bolt shifted to left side of car (tight), when loosened motor shifted to right side of car and some of the vibration was eliminated.  It does not appear that axle shafts are bent or Michelin tires have hidden defects.  Note: rack test was with and without tires --still vibration.   Has anyone seen this problem before?  Please help.  Thanks!

Answer:    Yes we have seen similar problems.  The CV joints on the drive axles are probably worn out.  Replacing them should fix your problem.

Question:  1989 Acura Legend.  Hello.  I'm trying to track down the specifics on a TSB that Acura issued in June 1990, TSB #89019 Antenna Sticks, which I think may spell out a fix for the sticking power antenna on my mother's 1989 Acura Legend.  Can you folks provide any detail on this service bulletin?  I'm hoping to find out whether there is a repair or service procedure on the clutch mechanism of the power antenna, or if this TSB simply calls for replacing the whole assembly.  Thanks for whatever help you can provide.  --Leigh

Answer:  Technical Service Bulletin 89-019 – Sticking Antenna – Model 1989 Acura Legend Sedan/Coupe – The antenna sticks in either the up or down position.  Corrective Action:   1.  To protect the fender, cut a hole the size of the antenna nut in a piece of material such as outdoor carpet, card board, etc., and put it over the antenna nut.  2.  Using the Antenna Nut Wrench, remove the antenna nut, spacer, and the antenna mast.  You do not have to remove the power antenna motor to remove the antenna mast.  If corrosion has occurred between the antenna nut and mast housing threads, apply rust penetrate before removing the antenna nut.  In severe cases, the antenna nut wrench may not remove the nut, so vise-grips will be required.  3.  Clean the antenna mast housing threads and reinstall the spacer and busing.  4.  Install a new antenna mast and nut.  5.  Use the Antenna Nut Wrench and a torque wrench – torque the antenna nut to 20 lbs-in.  6.  Check that the antenna mast retracts and extends fully when the radio is turned on and off repeatedly.  If the antenna nut is over-torqued, the antenna may stick.  If sticking occurs, reduce the torque level until the antenna moves freely.
