Shakes or Wobbles problem

My wife's 2006 Pontiac shakes violently at highway speeds. However, it doesn't do it under any regular set of circumstances. The vehicle won't shake for weeks, then will shake violently around 70 MPH. My wife believes that the shake is starting around the front driver's side tire. I have as yet been unable to replicate it when I drive the vehicle. Took it to the dealership and they diagnosed it as a bent rim. Wouldn't a bent rim cause the vibration at all times? Anything else I need to have checked before having the wheel repaired?
