Computer problem
2006 Pontiac G6 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 45000 miles

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2006 PONTIAC G6 THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY A RENTAL CAR. THE CAR DID NOT HAVE A KEY FOB. THE DEALER PURCHASED A KEY FOB AND CARRIED IT TO THE LOCAL PONTIAC DEALER TO PROGRAM IT. LONG STORY SHORT, THEY COULD NOT PROGRAM IT BECAUSE THEY SAID THE BCM HAD BEEN "LOCKED" BY GM AS PER THE RENTAL COMPANY. THEY TELL ME I HAVE TO BUY A NEW BCM TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY ALSO SAID A USED ONE WOULD "PROBABLY" NOT WORK BECAUSE THE PROGRAM IN IT COULD BE "LOCKED" ALSO. I JUST THINK WITH TECHNOLOGY BEING THE WAY IT IS THAT I AM GETTING THE RUN-AROUND. DOES THIS STORY SOUND TRUE?

DId you have the seller contact the rental company?

They should either unlock the BCM or provide the seller with the appropiate codes to unlock it, or provide you with a new BCM at no charge.

it is true, once the bcm is programmed the info is "locked".the only way is to replace and reprogramm a new bcm.A new body control module (BCM) must be programmed with the proper regular production option (RPO) configurations. The BCM stores the information regarding the vehicle options and if the BCM is not properly configured with the correct RPO codes the BCM will not control all of the features properly. The Tech 2 software will automatically prompt you with the various RPO's available for the vehicle. Use extreme care when verifying both the VIN and Odometer reading that is set in the service BCM. Once the VIN and Odometer are set in the replacement BCM it is impossible to change them, and if there is a mismatch, the part will be rendered useless. you could ask the dealer to see if they can change the rpo options in the bcm.
