Air Conditioning problem

I have a 2006 Ford Freestyle with the dual climate control and rear a/c. After a drink was spilt over the climate control unit in th dash all the buttons were working fine just sticking. I pulled the system out of the dash cleaned the buttons with a slightly damp cloth without spraying any liquids directly on the unit and reinstalled it. Now all the buttons are working but the auto button. It will not turn the system on as it use to I have to turn the system on by pressing the temp up button and I can not lower the temp for ether the drivers or passenger side of the car. Dose the system have to be reset after it's unplugged or do I have a problem with the unit.
