2005 Pontiac G6 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 27000 miles

I am trying to connect a new battery in my vehicle. I connected the positive cable first and then tried the negative cable. When I did this, I get sparks and my car horn goes off.

Can you tell me what I am doing wrong and what I should be doing.
