2004 GMC Yukon V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 44000 miles

I recently bought a used 04 Yukon from a private party. When I am driving down the road and hit the 4 hi button, it locks up my tires. I tried with it in neutral although you are supposed to be able to push either the auto 4 wheel drive or the 4 hi button while you are moving according to the owners manual, and it does engage but with a very loud clunk sound. Same noise if I push 4 lo and it acts like it doesn't want to go. I couldn't say for sure but I would doubt that the previous owner used the 4 wheel drive much, if at all. Thanks for any help!
