Engine Performance problem
2004 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic
----------------------------------------------------------------
My daughters 2004 Ford Taurus had been having a decrease in power. It died on her and my husband replaced the alternator. It was clear that it was bad. It is still not running well. When you start it up and riv it some then it dies when you let off the gas. if you get it on the road it runs fine, but when you stop and it will die. It will idle but if you riv it up much or put it in gear then it dies. PLEASE help. She needs her car to get to college and back.

Try cleaning the Idle Air Control Motor. Also clean out around the butterfly in the throttle bore with carb cleaner and a rag. This should help stabilize the idle.

We replaced the alternator, then it would start but not idle unless you kept it reved up but then it would die after you let off the gas. We replaced the IAC like suggested. Now it will idle a little but still dies. The air conditioner compressor is making a noise and is going out as well. Need help in what to do next!

I suggested cleaning it out, not replacing it.Is the check engine light on? If so have it scanned for codes, this may help figure out what is wrong. Also look for vacuum leaks, they will affect the idle and power

Thank you for all the help. We let it run awhile and it is now idling but not as high as it should. Will this get better with driving it or is ther something else we should do? We know the air conditioner compressor motor is also going out and that makes it sound bad as well. Should we just try running it, I dont want to mess anything up. Thank you in advance...........

Clean out the throttle bore as well.that will also stabilize idle. Does the car have a tachometer? if so what rpm is it idling at? If the a/c compressor is noisy, you shouldnt use it, as it may be contaminating the system with metal debris, unless it is just the bearing. If it is the bearing, then you need to have it replaced or the belt will fail due to misalignment of the pulleys and that will cause the engine to overheat. Is it always noisy or just with a/c on? if always it is probably the bearing, if only a/c then it is the compressor

It is noisy all the time. But we found out part of the problem is that it is blowing the A/C clutch relay, PCM keep alive power fuse. Do you think we should replace the compressor or could it be just the bearing? We appreciate all the help!!

If we do replace the compressor, do we also have to replace the accumulator or anything else?

Takes alot of special pullers to do just the clutch and bearing.I would probably do the entire compressor.Yes you should replace the accumulator/ receiver dryer as well.
