Engine Cooling problem

I have been having a problem with the PT Cruiser, my engine light will come on for awhile, then shut off. When I start the car, there will be a small puddle of water that leaks from the engine compartment. A friend had a scope which said it was the thermostat, so I replaced the thermostat, but that was not the problem. The car can be sitting for days, and when I start it there will be a puddle of water - originally thought it may just be the A/C.
