2003 Ford Escape battery not holding charge after alternato

2003 Ford Escape 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 55000 miles

I had a friend jump my battery after the alternator was changed in my vehicle and he hooked the cables on the wrong terminals. The battery won't hold a charge. The battery is only a few months old. Could he have changed the polarity on the battery and if so what other damage could he have done to the electrical system?
