2003 Dodge Caravan A/C Problems

Air Conditioning problem
2003 Dodge Caravan Two Wheel Drive Automatic

When the A/C is on their is a strange sound every few secounds it like a small motor reving out of control. When the A/C is turn off everything seems to run normally. What could this be? Also, I was told this could be a compressor problem, if it is and the compressor fails, would this prevent the vehicle from operating?
