Engine Cooling problem

The warning light for the engine coolant came on saying it was low (at a recent service, they had failed to fill it!). We were on the highway in France and eventually got to a city. The temperature gauge was still right in the middle. After stopping at light the car stalled and would not restart. We refilled the coolant and let the car sit for 1/2 hour. Still would not restart. It turns over but won't catch. Had it towed to an Audi dealership. They cannot get it to start and keep asking me if there is some button or something I did to turn it off. All this is going on in French. Is there some trick here? Shouldn't they know about it or is it something about models sold in the US?
