Engine Performance problem

my golf will start and idle fine but when i press the gas i get no rpm's. i can drive it but with very little power. i had the check engine light and epc light come on and ran a diagnostic check. i got a code for engine coolant system performance so i repolaced the coolant temp sensor. of course i disconnected the battery before i replaced the sensor dso when i turned the car back on the lights went out but still no rpm's.
