i have just bought a renault clio and when i change gear, for instance, going from first into second, the gear stick really shudders and feels like it is going to jump out of gear

This may be a faulty reaction spring in the clutch plate hub, a worn clutch lining, a fly wheel that may need machining, i feel you will be best served to have the clutch operation inspected by a mechanic .
