Transmission problem

I was drivin fine when out of no where the shift wouldnt go in to second gear or any gear for that matter I turned off the car and then it would go into the gears so with the car turned off i put it in to first and started it back up then with a little work i could then shift gears but ir sounded like with rpm s it wasnt catching very well it would really only go in 4th but barely --i made it home about 3 miles -- no leaking fluid or smells of any kind so my question is do you thind its the clutch itsself or could it be the slave cylinder or the mastercylinder
