Engine Performance problem

Hello, I have a 2002 CRV that runs well; avg 22 mpg city, 28 highway. The check engine light comes on for a day or two, then goes off for anywhere from a day to a week. Every time I have the codes checked, it's the same..P 420, oxygen sensors. If I add dry gas, the light stays off for a week.
Can it be something besides oxygen sensors? Like I said, the engine runs great! plenty of pick up, no smoke, no rough idle... I have a hard time believing it's the oxygen sensors or catastrophic converter.

P0420 = Catalyst System Efficiency below threshold.

The catalytic converter is nearing its end soon.
