Electrical problem
2002 Honda Civic 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 47,800 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Honda Civic LX 2002, 47, 800mi.- slow to start after key is turned-
I took my car to a Honda dealer who did not use the OBDII on my car, but told me my fuel pump was shot.
I left w/o the repair, but I did replace the Fuel Pump Sensor.
Problem remains.
I contact another Honda dealer who said: Main Relay. I replaced that. Problem remains.
I replaced my battery. Problem remains.
Plugs only 2months old.
Air filter and oil change recent change.
No warning lights in dash.
Had an auto parts store put an OBDII on it: no warning codes.
What is the problem, PLEASE!!!!

Hi Liddy,

I would suggest testing the fuel pressure and checking the injectors.
Are the sparks at plugs good?

Thank you for the response.
When the dealer said: fuel pump shot, he had done a check. He did not say injectors were a problem: he said they were okay.
Honda plugs are only about 2 months old. The engine will turn over but, it's slow to do so.
I recently was told it maybe the starter switch. I'm going to change that.
Anymore thoughts on this subject would be appreciated.

Thank you all !!!!

Hi Liddy,

You mean the cranking speed is slow?

If thet is the case, you need to check

1. Battery voltage and high rate discharge.
2. Battery terminals connections, cables and ground straps.
3. Starter.

Should not be ignition switch if cranking is slow but can be if it does not fires up.

Understand there is a recall for ignition switches, call the dealer and enquire if your vehicle is on the list.

Thank you again for your responses!!!!

It is a new battery (2 weeks old) and there appears to be noticeable wear and tear on any cables or wires-this car has 47,900 miles for being a 2002. Trust me, the biggest thing this car has ever done was drive from the east coast to the southwest (1) time. I use it ONLY for around town. I had it thoroughly checked out by the dealer before I made my move here.

This n-n sound than the car starts -started doing this 3 weeks ago. It use to just turn over after I turned the key.

I changed the power relay and fuel sensor, also !

I don't consider anything I have changed out to be a waste of money-it's just par for the course. But I will not, nor do I like being jerked around for repairs I KNOW in my heart I don't need; aka fuel pump, LOL's

I already asked two Honda dealers here if there were any recalls on my car: both said NO! So what am I suppose to do?

Hi Liddy,

Did you try jump starting ?

I would suggest servicing the starter for a start.

My 02 civic 56,000 miles is having the same problem. It runs great just has a hard time starting. Some times up to 4 or 5 seconds of cranking. Battery checks out fine as does the starter. New plugs and clean air filter. Going to talk to honda tomorrow.

do you have an after market alarm or remote start?
Have you changed any relays under the steering column?

Hey liddy,
I spent a few hours today working on mine. I took it to my honda dealer and went over a bunch of things. Today my car finally though a check engine code which included everything on the fuel side. Included is the fuel pump and possibly vacuum line or O2 sensor. They are leaning toward the o2 sensor. Had to order it in and will be here tomorrow. Let you know the results.
