Have you checked the fuel pump?
Also, check your fuel lines for leaks, and your fuel pressure regulator (remove the vacuum line connected to it, and check inside for fuel; if there is fuel inside the vacuum line, replace regulator).

Sounds like you could use some help ,I used to have a diesel Ford Tempo 86 and after 200.000 I had some trouble with the head gasket ,Some one drove it before i bought it and ran it with out Pres~tone in it and over heated it,then i bought it with out knowing ,changes the head gasket had the head shaved and never did get it running right , Had to scrap it in the end ,try going to http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/ they can help ,
Regards and good luck, also could just be air in the system some where ,Pump/filter could even be electric problem it sounds like it was running good before you went to that shop ,probably some thing to do with that chow friend .Silly question but "did some one put gas in it ? that sounds right on the mark too .
