Electrical problem
2002 Ford Escape 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 95000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I have a 2002 Ford Escape and occasionally the rear glass and liftgate would not unlock. After trying it and then driving around for awhile it would unlock and I could open it. This was very intermittent and usually would function properly both with the keyless and from the switch on the drivers door. Today, I had the liftgate open and put the latching mechanism in the closed position. Then I used the keyless and screw driver and opened the latching mechanism into the open position. (Why I did this I'm not sure.) Anyway, now I have no problems with the glass or lift gate closing and opening or locking in place, but the latch handle does not lock. So even with the car alarmed I can now open the rear gate and window. Also, without the alarm sounding. So, basically I traded one problem for another. I was probably better off before. Should I just replace the latching mechanism or is there something with the alarm / locking system that could just be reset. Thanks!

I just had my actuator fail so it would no longer lock unlock automatically. Using the key would work fine.

I was cheap and bought a new one at nearby electronics store for $18. I've seen online versions for $6. It took extra effort/time, but better than buying a full latch mechanism - I've heard over $150 plus labor if you can't do it yourself.

SO. During this ordeal, I had the same problem you described. Close door, open latch and use screw driver to pretend you are latch door. Push inside latch mechanism/catch with flatblade screwdriver to engage and lock it. Use the handle to unlock. Now try closing your glass latch door - it should work now.

Also, there is a recall related to the rear latch mechanism. Try to get this checked out - see if you can avoid the hassle all together and get it for free.

Good luck.
