Engine Cooling problem

I have a mechanic that works on my truck anytime there is a problem. It seems that he charges quite a bit more for work he does now than a few years back. I'm not sure if this is normal inflation or if he is just charging more to make more money. He is replacing the water pump today and the cost is $300. He replaced brake pads, resurfaced rotors, changed oil, replaced spark plugs, replaced air filter a few months back for roughly $600. Is his pricing competitive or inflated?
