Engine Performance problem
2002 Dodge Ram V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 70000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I drove my truck from Texas to Idaho. While driving through Colorado, I hit a patch of ice on the freeway and spun out a few times on the highway. The truck never impacted with anything and came to a stop after the spinning but the service engine light came on. I drove about 100 miles after that and it was running fine, then all of the sudden black smoke started pouring out of the exhaust. After that, it started to lose power and consuming gas like you wouldn't believe. I had to stop to fill up the tank after every 100 miles. At each gas stop I would buy additives to put into the gas tank to try and clean out the system. I had the truck checked at several stations too, and their computers all said that there was something wrong with the oxygen sensor. After arriving in Idaho, the truck ran just fine with no smoke or power loss, however, the service engine light never went off. I took it to a service station again and they their computers said that something was (still) wrong with the oxygen sensor. I drove the truck in the city for about a year and it continued to run fine until just recently when it started smoking again (a little less smoke than previous episodes) but this time it did not lose power. I tuned it up and checked all the hoses-everything looks good. I've been reviewing the repair manual and found that aside from the fuel pressure regulator, the power train control module (PCM) could be the problem. What do you think about this and do you have any advice on what else the problem could be?
