DTC P0351: IGNITION COIL #1 CIRCUIT, DTC P0352: IGNITION COIL #2 CIRCUIT, DTC P0353: IGNITION COIL #3 CIRCUIT, DTC P0354: IGNITION COIL #4 CIRCUIT, DTC P0355: IGNITION COIL #5 CIRCUIT OR DTC P0356: IGNITION COIL #6 CIRCUIT

NOTE: All DTCs listed above are diagnosed using the same test. For component location, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS . For connector identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After each repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-5 under VERIFICATION TESTS to ensure system is functioning properly.

Monitored & Set Conditions
Ignition coil primary circuit is monitored when battery voltage is greater than 8 volts during engine cranking or greater than 12 volts with engine running, engine RPM less than 3000, and none of the coils in dwell when checked. DTC will set when peak current is not achieved with battery based dwell plus 1.5 milliseconds of diagnostic offset. It takes less than 3 seconds during cranking or up to 6 seconds while running to set.
Possible Causes
 Intermittent Condition
 ASD Relay Output Circuit Open
 Ignition Coil Capacitor(s) Shorted To Ground
 ASD Output Circuit Shorted To Ground
 Coil On Plug
 Coil Driver Circuit Shorted To Ground
 Coil Driver Circuit Open
 PCM

Testing
1.Turn ignition on, engine off. With the DRBIII(R), read DTCs and record the related Freeze Frame data. Is the Good Trip counter displayed and equal to zero? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 9 . 2.Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the Coil On Plug harness connector related to DTC that is set. Turn ignition on, engine not running. With the DRBIII(R), actuate the ASD Relay. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground (B-), check the ASD relay output circuit at the Coil On Plug harness connector. Does the test light illuminate brightly? If yes, stop all actuations and go to next step. If no, stop all actuations and go to step 7 .
NOTE: The following resistance measurement should be taken at 70-80°F (21-26°C).

3.Turn the ignition off. Measure the primary resistance of the Coil On Plug (component side). Is the resistance between 0.6 and 0.9 ohm? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the Coil On Plug. 4.Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. Measure the resistance between the Coil Driver circuit at the Coil On Plug harness connector and ground. Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? If yes, repair the short to ground in the Coil Driver circuit. If no, go to next step. 5.Measure the resistance of the Coil Driver circuit from the Coil On Plug connector to the PCM connector. Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open Coil Driver circuit.
NOTE: Before continuing, check the PCM harness connectors for corrosion, damage or terminal push out. Repair as necessary.
6.There are no possible causes remaining, replace PCM. Program the new PCM. See PROGRAMMING . 7.Ensure the ignition is off and Coil On Plug is disconnected. Remove the ASD Relay from the PDC. Measure the resistance of the ASD Relay Output circuit between the ASD Relay connector and the Coil On Plug harness connector. Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open in the ASD Relay Output circuit.
NOTE: Repeat the following test for both Ignition Coil Capacitors. The Ignition Coil Capacitors are attached to the side of each valve cover.
8.Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the Ignition Coil Capacitor harness connector. Install a good INJ/COIL fuse (fuse S) in the PDC. With the DRBIII(R), actuate the ASD Relay. Is the INJ/COIL fuse okay for both Ignition Coil Capacitor tests? If yes, replace the Ignition Coil Capacitor(s). If no, repair the short to ground in the ASD Output circuit.
WARNING: When the engine is operating, do not stand in a direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing.
9.The conditions that set the DTC are not present at this time. The following may help in identifying the intermittent condition. With the engine running at normal operating temperature, monitor the DRBIII(R) parameters related to the DTC while wiggling the wiring harness. Look for parameter values to change and/or a DTC to set. Review the DRBIII(R) Freeze Frame information. If possible, try to duplicate the conditions under which the DTC was set. Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) that may apply. Visually inspect the related wiring harness. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires. Visually inspect the related wiring harness connectors. Look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded terminals. Were any of the above conditions present? If yes, repair as necessary. If no, test is complete.

Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-2 under VERIFICATION TESTS to ensure system is functioning properly.

Monitored & Set Conditions
System is monitored with engine running. DTC will set if the PCM detects that the secondary ignition burn time is incorrect or not present. DTC is a one trip fault.
Possible Causes
 Intermittent Condition
 Spark Plug
 Ignition Coil Operation
 Ignition Coil

Testing
1.Turn ignition on, engine off. With the DRBIII(R), read DTCs and record the related Freeze Frame data. Is the Good Trip counter displayed and equal to zero? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 3 . 2.Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the Ignition Coil harness connector that is related to the DTC that is set. Remove the ignition coil. Before continuing inspect the Ignition Coil for damage or carbon tracking on the Coil or the spark plug insulator boot. Replace Ignition Coil as necessary. If no problem is found, install a spark tester to the Ignition Coil. Reconnect the Ignition Coil harness connector to the Ignition Coil. While cranking the engine, observe the spark coming from the spark tester. The Ignition Coil should generate a crisp Blue spark that is able to jumper the gap of the spark tester. Does the Ignition Coil generate a good spark. If yes, replace the Spark Plug. If no, replace the Ignition Coil. 3.Turn the ignition off. Remove the Spark Plug. Inspect the Spark Plug for the following conditions.
 Cracks
 Carbon Tracking
 Foreign Material
 Gap Size Out Of Specification
 Loose Or Broke Electrode
