Tires and Wheels problem

While going at speeds above 50 a thumping like occurs on the driver's side front - at first I thought I had a flat tire, but didn't. Took it to mechanic and he drove it and, of course, didn't hear it at all. That was three weeks ago and it seems to be getting worse.. Could this just be a need for alignment? My regular mechanic has retired and I have not reached much raport with my new one and I reallly hate being an overly persistent customer if you get my meaning. The thumping stops when I let up on the gas.
