2002 Chevy Suburban V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 100000 miles

Our 02 Suburban quit while driving down the road. It had just under a half a tank of gas in it. It was in the middle of a snow storm so we just pulled it off the side of the road (we are out in the country). When we pulled it off the road it said it was out of gas so we just took some gas to it and tried it again and it still didn't start. Is there something in it that would tell it it is out of gas when it isn't? The battery is fine as it turned over but that is all it will do.
