Electrical problem

My vehicle battery light came on, all guages, radio, a/c, etc went off and then car died. Installed new battery and car started, but after driving home, the battery had discharged a bit. Removed alternator and took to auto parts store where it was tested and passed the test 6 times. I reinstalled it, but the battery light still comes on and the battery continues to discharge when driving. A mechanic told me to start up the vehicle and then remove the negative connection from the battery. If the car died, it was the alternator. I'm wondering if in fact the alternator is bad, despite the "pass" from the testing. If it isn't the alternator, where do I look next?
