Electrical problem

Recently I have been experiencing a complete battery drain on my suburban. I have had to replace teh battery 3 times. I have had the alternator tested and it tested good. I have also used a meter and disconnected the negative side of teh battery to see if there was an major drain, but could not find anything. Now I have asked friends and they said replace the voltage regulator. I believe that this is internal on the alternator. Is this true? If this could not be the problem, is there a way to test to see if I have a short somewhere. I am thinking about looking at both battery cables to see if I can see any chaffing. Do you have any other advice on this that I could possibly try to get my truck running again
