Engine Cooling problem
2002 BMW 325 6 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 71000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
2002 BMW 325XI, 71000 miles. I am getting "Service Engine Soon" display. I took my car to the Firestone service center and after running the diagnostic they told me that I have to change thermostat.

Does that sound right?

Appreciate your response.

Thanks

They told me the main code was PO128 and they got two more codes which were not in there system and they are OX A8 and OX D1.

Next day when I called they told me that OX D1 is actually 209 code but they didn't knew what it meant.

Any information that you can give me about these codes will be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks

P0128 its indicate that coolant thermostat keeping coolant below thermostat regulating temperature
as for the other code s
may I suggest you have it scanned by a scanner that will read BMW and or have the software to do so
generic OBDII scanner like the one at auto zone will give just the generic codes

Thanks for your reply. Do I need to change the thermostat soon? How expensive is thermostat? I don't have the Service Engine Soon display now. It goes off for few days and then comes back and stays for 2-3 days.

Can I buy the scanner that reads BMW codes?

Thanks,
Tuhin Verma

The thermostat costs about 60 bucks retail price. Yes you should if there is smog due soon. There are code readers out there for 100 bucks or so, go to Kragen or Pep Boys or shop it online
