Engine Performance problem

Hi - I have a problem with my vehicle and want to know what the problem is. At times my car won't start, but the radio - lights etc work. When trying to turn it over it sounds like a machine gun or sometimes there is nothing at all. Once it is jumped it seems to work for a while, however, if it sits too long without starting it...it again won't start. I think it sounds like the alternator with little or no mechanical experience.

ALSO: When I first start my car in the morning it sounds like a fan is heavily working. Once I put it into gear and drive this noise stops.
